Full Moon, Blue Moon
New Year's Eve Partial Lunar Eclipse
ending the 1st decade of the 21st century
December 31, 2009 |
Blue Moon, you saw me standing alone/ Without a dream in my heart/ Without a love of my own./ Blue Moon, you knew just what I was there for/ You heard me saying a prayer for/ Someone I really could care for./ And then there suddenly appeared before me.../ I heard somebody whisper, "Please adore me"/ And when I looked, the moon had turned to gold. - words by Lorenz Hart, music by Richard Rodgers

Turning Blue Moons Into Gold
saying a prayer for
Hello there. Hope you enjoyed (survived as the case may be) the celebration of Solstice and Christmas. Now we need to enjoy/survive New Year's Eve! We have a lovely celestial light show on New Year's Eve - a Full Blue Moon Partial Eclipse. See below for more info. Alignment of all aspects of self is key. The eclipse of December 31st is in the sign of Cancer in the astrological mandala. Public and Private must reasonably match. This is the Capricorn/Cancer balancing act. All we can do is strive to get closer to that ideal. I wish all of you a happy and peaceful 2010. And I look forward to seeing you next year:) Cheers Carol

Blue Moon
once in two decades
"Everything we ever imagined, thought or felt is available now. This is chaos." Christine Page on Chaos and Re-Creating Our Lives. On Thursday December 31st at 2:13pm EST we will experience a Full Blue Moon at 11 degrees of Cancer/Capricorn (Moon in Cancer/Sun in Capricorn). A Blue Moon occurs when two Full Moons occur in a calendar. We call the second Full Moon the Blue Moon. A Blue Moon occurs roughly every 2.5 years. This Thursday's Blue Moon is a bit more uncommon because it is happening on New Years Eve-a coincidence that happens only about once in every twenty years. So this particular Blue Moon is slightly more qualified than most for the saying: "once in a blue moon". And, as Susan Miller writes, " This eclipse might bring a 'once in a lifetime' event." It's the end of the first decade of the 21st century; and it seems the Lunar presence is putting a bit of an exclamation point on that transition. Here is some good advice for the safe navigation of this touchy transition. " It is wise to keep gatherings intimate and safe. The eclipse comes with a caution to keep personal safety in mind; and if you're traveling, stay in the city where you're celebrating. Eclipses can bring sudden news, and in Cancer, it has to do with security, family, and for Americans, our national identity. Everyone may be seeking comfort, a sense of intimate connection, hominess." (Susan Miller)

Partial Lunar Eclipse
eight point two percent
Every year / simpler and quieter / preparation for the New Year --Mitsu Suzuki, Zen Master The New Year's Eve partial eclipse can be seen throughout most of the northern hemisphere. Sky and Telescope says: "It won't be much of a visual treat - but at least it'll be noticeable!" So do step outside of your New Year's Celebrations to look up. Maybe crack open some champagne out there while you're at it. Celebrate the old and toast in the new. "A lunar eclipse occurs when the moon passes behind the earth and the earth blocks the sun's rays from striking the moon. This can occur only when the Sun, Earth, and Moon are aligned exactly, or very closely, with the Earth in the middle. Hence, there is always a full moon the night of a lunar eclipse... A partial lunar eclipse occurs when only a portion of the Moon passes through Earth's umbral shadow." Wikipedia The fact that the December 31st eclipse is partial signals to me that at the end of the first decade of the 21st century, our transformation is only partially complete. Well, I guess that's pretty obvious when we look around at the state of the world and the crises on our plates - collectively and personally. Because of global technology, humans' lack of compassion for their fellow humans is right in our faces. We will be looking at it intently over the next decade. In other words, we are just warming up. The second decade of the 21st century brings singular intensity in many different ways (from an astrological perspective, it is jam-packed). This is a decade of reckoning, when our unrealized dreams and negative patterns will be tested, as their outcomes become more and more obvious in the external world. Think about this number and say it out loud: 2020. That's right - 2020. One decade from now. How futuristic does that number sound? It kind of blows my mind. Then, think back to, say, 1995 - which is when Windows 95 opened the internet information highway (the world wide web) to the mainstream. That was 15 years ago. In this next decade. Similar - perhaps even more profound - leaps will be made. The Greatest Generation, the ones who lived through the Great Depression and two World Wars will all be gone by 2020. The Boomers, who were born from 1940 to about 1965 and represented a large influx of souls, will be around 70 or 80 years old. The new generations will be in charge. Gen X, Gen Y, The Millennials, The Indigos. Where will we be in 2020? Where will you be in 2025 (15 years from now)? The phrase 'you aint seen nothing yet' comes to mind. At maximum, only 8.2% of the lunar disc will be in the umbral shadow for this eclipse. To me this means that only 8.2% of the necessary emotional clearing has been completed since the year 2000. This emotional clearing is necessary for humanity to stop putting selfish personal security above creating a sustainable and compassionate world. The need for emotional clearing is urgent. The only way we will be able to change the fate of humanity (and end war, hunger, poverty, disease, environmental devastation, climate change - whatever, there is a long laundry list) is if we clean our own wounds and begin to look around and say: how can I help? Compassion has to come from an open heart. In order to truly (for) give, you must be willing to open your heart and release the pain. - Brandon Bays |
In the Sign of Cancer
it's your party, cry if you want to
The rain-weeping and the sun burning twine together to make us grow. Keep your intelligence white-hot and your grief glistening, so your life will stay fresh. Cry easily like a little child. ~ Rumi When I feel blue, I start breathing again. - heard on the radio This eclipse is linked to last summer's Total Solar Eclipse in Cancer (July 22, 2009). For many of us, that was an intense time. (For me it was radically life-changing as that Eclipse was exact on my own Moon at 28 degrees of Cancer). This week's eclipse might bring resolution or culmination to things that occurred back in July. Take a moment to think back to that time. This moon actually does have a touch of the sad 'Blue Moon' quality described in the song of the same name; mainly because it is in the sign of Cancer, which is the most emotional of all of the signs. Plus, this is a Lunar eclipse which tends to tug on the emotions as well. Astrologically we say that the Moon is most at home in ('ruler' of) the sign of Cancer. So the Full Moon in Cancer is an extra good time to examine your emotions to see if you are repressing them - or wallowing in them. The next step is to make sure you nurture yourself as much you nurture others. Then take stock: are you giving too much, to the point of exhaustion, which will render you useless in the long run? (Be honest now.) Coming just after the holidays, this Full Moon will surely illuminate how we spread ourselves too thin; doing things that maybe we don't even want to do, with no quiet time for our souls. You may find yourself crying under this eclipse (remember: the effects of an eclipse start at least 2 weeks beforehand). Deep sadness may be triggered by any number of internal or external events. SHORTHAND: You will be around family for the holidays. 'Nuff said. Perhaps you aren't used to feeling these feelings. Try to sit with them as best you can. And if you see someone else letting their emotions flow, don't try to block their expression. Sit with them and help them to allow the release. Crying is good for you? Tears are nature's emotional processing? Science is beginning to confirm the accuracy of such statements: http://bit.ly/8a1zhL As I have mentioned many times recently, letting go is key now. Between now and March we are preparing for intense transformation in the second half of the year. Do your homework. "I held on to every trinket from my past. But I kept so many of these historical artifacts that I didn't have any room for the present. I wanted to throw parties and have friends to visit in a home where they could actually sit down. So I photographed those things, then cleared them out to make space for the next chapters of my life." http://bit.ly/5etdew

The Retrograde Saga Continues
mind reviews bodies' heart and soul
The backdrop of this New Year's Eve eclipse is the continuing Retrograde Saga. I.e. both Mars and Mercury are retrograde right now. The Ghosts of Christmas Past (and/or decades past) might walk through your wall on some nights as you lie sleeping in your bedchamber. The Mind will review the actions of the Body over the past 2 years (and perhaps beyond) to discern whether those actions are in alignment with the true desires of the Heart and the mandates of the Soul. Also, the Mars Retro effect (in play through March 10, 2010) is a time for recharging your batteries. Mars is our energy source, our power source. It is the engine in our car. Venus represents our heart's desire and Mars is how we go about getting it. Check out how that equation is playing out in your life. What is your heart's desire and how do you get (or not get) what you want?

The Eclipses of 2010
a brief look ahead
"2010 begins in the middle of an eclipse season and ends in the middle of another. The December 31, 2009 eclipse has its counterpart solar eclipse on January 15, 2010. During June and July comes another two-eclipse season. And then in December another eclipse season begins with a lunar eclipse in late December and ends in January 2011 with a partial solar eclipse. Thus in 2010, there will be four eclipses (the most common number)." - Joe Rao in "Guy Ottewell's Astronomical Calendar 2010." Of particular interest as far as eclipses go in 2010 - and the one that is extremely compelling to me - is the December 20-21 Total Lunar Eclipse. This eclipse not only falls on the Winter Solstice - a powerpoint every December - but it is TOTAL. Totality always revs up the impact on the human psyche. Much will be written about this eclipse as the year goes on. I will throw in my .02 at some point as well :) Another eclipse of interest in 2010 is the July 11 Total Solar Eclipse. This eclipse falls mainly over the South Pacific Ocean. It just barely manages to make contact with land: at the very last moment of the eclipse the shadow tippy-touches the Cook Islands (Little Tahiti), Easter Island, southern Chile and southern Argentina. Astronomers don't regard eclipses whose shadow tracks only over the sea as significant. However, this is a Total Eclipse and so, on a psycho-spiritual level, we need to heed it. The Total Solar Eclipse always freaks out the ego, and this is unsettling. We can teflon the effects by becoming conscious of potentialities. In addition, for me, eclipses over the ocean can be associated with earthquakes deep at the bottom of the ocean - which can lead to tsunami's on land. NOTE: We will not see another Total Solar Eclipse until November 3, 2012 (spooky close to the dreaded December 21, 2012 "end-date". Boo!) Like the July 11, 2010 TSE, it too will fall over the open waters of the South Pacific. More will be revealed. Additionally, the January 15, 2010 Annular (Ring-Shaped) Eclipse - coming up in two weeks - is important. The solar annulus (ring) is unusually wide and will create a weird sort of " counterfeit twilight." In addition, the moon at the time of this eclipse will be about as far away from the earth as it can be and will appear much smaller than average. What is most interesting here is that this eclipse will make contact with two heavily-populated continents, including the huge city of Chongquing in China. This is the second central solar eclipse that has fallen over Chonquing in less than six months. Again, this eclipse is coming up in 2 weeks and so is in effect right now.

365 Great Days in 2010
most days begin in the morning
365 Great Days in 2010 - by Phillip Humbert: The first days of a new year are always special, like the first footprints in new snow. This time can set the tone for everything to follow, the way the first hour of the morning sets the tone for the entire day. Most days begin in the morning. So it follows that to have a great year, focus on how you start your days. How you begin the morning sets the tone for the day. Carefully choose the first hour of your day. Decide thoughtfully and precisely exactly how you want to start your day each morning. Think soulfully about what gets you going, what seems "right" and special, what empowers you, gives you confidence and energy for the day. Be intentional about the morning. Negotiate your schedule, explain to the kids, do whatever it takes, but make it happen. Your life begins fresh and new each morning.

but at the peak we all gaze at the single bright moon.
