Mitzvah of the Month! Feeding the Hungry
Feeding the hungry is a responsibility incumbent upon all of us. Jewish law tells us that we are not allowed to refuse to give food to a hungry person. The following article came from Babaganewz.com.
A soup kitchen in Jerusalem provides meals for the hungry with dignity and style.
Carmei Ha'ir looks like a high-class restaurant: Its tables are set with dishes, silverware, and warm pita bread. The wait staff is polite and well-dressed, and the food is delicious. Yet you'll find no cash register at Carmei Ha'ir. Instead, a lockbox rests in its place, with a sign suggesting that you pay whatever you can afford.
Located in Jerusalem's Mahane Yehuda neighborhood, Carmei Ha'ir is actually a soup kitchen, and serves about 600 meals a day to Israel's hungry. It also provides hundreds of sandwiches for needy children in local schools. Supported by benefactors, Carmei Ha'ir often receives anonymous donations of produce and meat from the nearby Mahane Yehuda market vendors.
"Our aim is to provide food with dignity," says Rabbi Yehuda Azrad, who established Carmei Ha'ir along with Itzik Levitan and Momi Ben-Zruel in January 2004. "A person who is hungry and in distress can only think about today, about where his or her next meal is coming from. Dignity is what gives people hope and the ability to think about the future."
As we prepare to enjoy the New Year of 2011, let's pledge to be considerate of the needs of our community members and make donations of food or financial support to local shelters and food pantries., including The Full Plate, Rhode Island's kosher food pantry.

Recipe of the Month
Bruce's Grilled Cheese
Place 2 slices of American Cheese between 2 slices of bread...white or whole wheat, your choice! Brush the bread with melted butter on both sides and cook in a frying pan until the bread is toasty and the cheese is melty. Bruce then places the sandwiches in a warmer until we arrive in the dining room. Bruce often serves the sandwiches with cream of broccoli soup and always has feta cheese on the salad bar on grilled cheese day!
