Mitzvah of the Month!

Lashon Hara/Speaking Badly

Lashon Hara, translated literally, means evil tongue. An evil tongue refers to things like gossip, lying, a verbal bad attitude and most recently electronic and social media interactions.

One of the 613 Mitzvot/Commandments, Lashon Hara teaches us that speaking disrespectfully about or to others is considered to be a major blunder in Jewish tradition. While at camp, we play games like "two truths and a lie" to make ridiculous things seem true. This game played together and out loud is a great deal of fun. We play "telephone or operator " to see what nonsense comes at the end of whispered phrases to our cabin-mates. Shared together, our stories are silly bonding moments of friendly communication. Taken in another direction, false statements can be hurtful and divisive in a cabin setting.

As we prepare to enjoy the 2010 reunion together, let's pledge to be thoughtful in our communications via telephone, facebook, twitter, text messaging , emailing, and even....in person !

Recipes of the Month

Latkes

2 lbs  potatoes

2 onions

2 large eggs

A few tablespoons of Matzah Meal

Salt

Oil for frying

Peel and finely grate the potatoes and onions together. This can be done by hand...watch the knuckles or in a food processor.

Squeeze to remove the liquid

Beat the eggs lightly with salt, add to the potatoes, and stir well. Add Matzah meal to taste. Add as little as possible to hold the mixture together.

Drop tablespoons of Latke mix into hot oil. Drain and enjoy with sour cream or applesauce.

Applesauce

Makes approximately 3 pints.
6 pounds of assorted apples
2 cinnamon sticks
Cloves, allspice, ground ginger, and nutmeg (all optional and to taste)
1/2 Cup of water

Cut  the apples into quarters and place in a 6-quart pot with a lid. Pour in a half cup of water. Add cinnamon sticks and any of the other optional spices.

Cover the pot, and turn the flame on high. When the liquid starts boiling, turn to medium. Cook until the apples are soft--at least half an hour, but it could take up to an hour.

Put all of the apples into a Foley mill and squish up the apples, or push through a medium-holed strainer. The skins and seeds will not go through the mill or strainer. Sweeten if desired. Chill and serve with Latkes.

Staff News!

Welcome to Curtis Cook and his family, Robin, Rory, and Addie

cabins in autumn

Camp JORI is delighted to announce that Curtis Cook has joined our staff as Camp JORI's first full-time caretaker. Curtis is a skilled carpenter, contractor and all-around nice guy! Curtis and his wife, Robin have moved into the farmhouse at the front of camp's property. Addie and Rory are busy exploring the fields, muddy areas, and leaf piles as they make camp their own! We welcome the Cook's to the JORI family and look forward to working together.

You start singing"Leaving on a Jet Plane" whenever your friend goes home

Your favorite jewelry is made out of string

You categorize your friends by "school friends" and "the ones who REALLY understand me!"

Please send any of your ideas to campjori@gmail.com so we can publish them in our next issue!
