You know you're a JORI camper when....

You're confused when your alarm goes off and you don't hear Ronni's voice
You've slept in a pink tent
You think most administrators are nicknamed "Ron" and have a son named "Aaron"
You know that your camp would win any gimp and hemp bracelet inter-camp games
An accordion player is part of the Friday night song session group
You bang a table and high-five after every meal
You know that you have had the best lox cream cheese ever!
You think smorgasbord in either the best or the worst meal at camp
You would rather go on a trip than for a session each summer
You know that the youngest girls are way tougher than the kitchen boys
You want to have a shucking contest every time you pass an ear of corn
You never leave a building without your water bottle
It's hard to feel homesick when you have a grammi at camp

Mitzvah of the Month!

Telling the Story of Pesach

Mitzvot are commandments, rules and guidance for us to live a full, enriching life. There are 613 mitzvot in the Torah, and each month we will feature a mitzvah that will enrich your JORI experience.

As we prepare to celebrate the holiday of Passover (Pesach), it is important to remember that we are instructed to tell the story of Pesach in a way that all of us understand. The telling, Haggadah, is to be done amid questions, comments, and even more stories. Most of us are fortunate to celebrate among multiple generations of relatives and friends. In some ways, a seder is a lot like summer camp. Many opinions, many questions, new experiences, different foods, and even some people you've never met before this year's seder! The story of Passover which began with Pharoh, Moses, Miriam and their families and friends continues with all of us living in 2010, including those of us at Camp JORI!

JORI STAFF IS LEARNING!

Ronda, Ira, Aaron F, and Ronni attended the ACA New England Conference in Manchester New Hampshire on March 26 and 27. They  networked with colleagues, bought supplies and equipment, and got some new ideas for programming and staff training.

Since October, Ronni has been working with a group of camp directors to develop JORI's Israel and Judaic programming more fully. The series of four seminars began in October in Los Angeles at the Brandeis Bar Din institute. The second session was held in Connecticut at The Isabella Freedman Center. The third will be held in Israel attached to the training session with the new summer shlichim. Stay tuned for more details!

Ronni's Toffee Matzah Recipe

Ingredients
1/2 lb matzot
1 cup butter
1 cup brown sugar, packed
1 package chocolate chips

Directions

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

Line 2 jellyroll pans or cookie sheets with aluminum foil. Spread the matzah on the pans in a single layer with no space between the pieces (break the matzah as needed to fill the pan).

Melt butter and brown sugar on stove.

Boil until mixture coats a spoon, about 3-5 minutes.

Pour mixture over matzah and spread evenly with a knife.

One sheet at a time, bake until toffee is bubbly

As soon as you remove the pan from the oven, sprinkle 1/2 of the chocolate chips on the matzah.

Using a table knife, gently spread the chocolate to cover the matzah as completely as possible.

Repeat with second pan.

Place the pans in the refrigerator to cool. After the chocolate is completely cooled, break into small pieces.
