Mitzvot of the Month!

Purim in Jerusalem

Mishloach Manot
Purim Gifts of Food
Matanot L'evyonim
Gifts to the Needy

Mitzvot are commandments, rules and guidance for us to live a full, enriching life. There are 613 mitzvot in the Torah, and each month we will feature a mitzvah that will enrich your JORI experience.

As we prepare to celebrate the holiday of Purim, imagine our costumes, bake our hamentashen, it is important that we remember the mitzvot commonly associated with Purim to remember our friends and family with small gifts, and remember all who have basic needs to be met with monetary gifts to the needy. All mitzvot improve the quality of life for the "doer" and the recipient. To that end, JORI campers will have the opportunity interact within the larger community to perform mitzvot and make relationships with institutions and people who need some help this summer. We look forward to rolling out our new programming as we count down to camp!

Aaron and Marcy on Camels

Erin and Cedar at Baxter State Park

Erin Albanese has joined the JORI family and been living at camp since October along with her four footed friend, Cedar. Erin is Camp JORI's year-round caretaker, but oh, so much more! She has worked in camping for many years as the director and caretaker of a rural site in Maine. Erin has a great deal of experience working with children and families at risk, is certified in leading ropes course activities, and very knowledgeable about organic gardening, and environmental protection. All that, and just a great, kind, fun loving person! Erin has initiated a new recycling program that will continue through the summer. We are looking forward to a greener, more environmentally conscious summer!
Ronni's Hamentashen Recipe

1 Cup Sugar
3/4 Cup oil
3 Eggs
1/4 Cup orange juice and rind
4 Cups Flour
4 tsp Baking Powder
1/2 tsp Salt

Combine ingredients in order given. Roll out to 1/4 inch. Cut in circles. Fill with desired filling. Form into triangles. Bake at 350 degrees for 1/2 hour. Ronni's family likes chocolate chips, poppy seed filling and strawberry jam the best! Need help shaping the hamentashen? There are many helpful photos online!
