Williams County to receive additional federal food and shelter funds through stimulus bill
|
Bryan, Ohio - May 6, 2009 -
Williams County has been awarded $18,065 in additional federal funds through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) to
supplement emergency food and shelter programs in the county. The
selection was made by a National Board that is chaired by the Federal
Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and consists of representatives from
the Salvation Army; American Red Cross; United Jewish Communities;
Catholic Charities, USA; National Council of the Churches of Christ in
the USA; and the United Way of America. A Local Board is charged to
distribute funds appropriated by Congress to help expand the capacity
of food and shelter programs in our county.
The Williams County Emergency Food and Shelter Local Board is made
up of representatives from the United Way of Williams County, the
Salvation Army, Red Cross, Catholic Church, the Bryan Area
Ministerial Association, Northwest Ohio Community Action and
governmental officials. The Local Board will determine how the funds awarded to Williams
County are to be distributed among the emergency food and shelter
programs run by local service agencies in the area.
Under
the terms of the grant from the National Board, local agencies chosen
to receive funds must: 1) be private voluntary non-profits or units of
government, 2) have an accounting system, 3) practice
nondiscrimination, 4) have demonstrated the capability to deliver
emergency food and/or shelter programs, and 5) if they are a private
voluntary organization, they must have a voluntary board.
This funding is above and beyond the previous Emergency Food and Shelter grant awarded to Williams County, and will be treated as such to address the great increases in unemployment and community need that are being seen throughout our county.
Public
or private voluntary agencies interested in applying for ARRA Emergency Food
and Shelter funds must download an application by visiting www.unitedwaywc.org and viewing the EFSP section at the bottom of the main page. The deadline for returning applications is
12:00 noon, Wednesday, May 20, 2009.
