Williams County to receive federal food and shelter funds
|
Bryan, Ohio - February 13, 2009 -
Williams County has been chosen to receive $34,088 in federal funds to
supplement emergency food and shelter programs in the county. The
selection was made by a National Board that is chaired by the Federal
Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and consists of representatives from
the Salvation Army; American Red Cross; United Jewish Communities;
Catholic Charities, USA; National Council of the Churches of Christ in
the USA; and the United Way of America. A Local Board is charged to
distribute funds appropriated by Congress to help expand the capacity
of food and shelter programs in our county.
The Williams County Emergency Food and Shelter Local Board is made
up of representatives from the United Way of Williams County, the
Salvation Army, Red Cross, the Bryan Area
Ministerial Association, Northwest Ohio Community Action and
governmental officials. The Local Board will determine how the funds awarded to Williams
County are to be distributed among the emergency food and shelter
programs run by local service agencies in the area.
Under
the terms of the grant from the National Board, local agencies chosen
to receive funds must: 1) be private voluntary non-profits or units of
government, 2) have an accounting system, 3) practice
nondiscrimination, 4) have demonstrated the capability to deliver
emergency food and/or shelter programs, and 5) if they are a private
voluntary organization, they must have a voluntary board. Qualifying
agencies that serve Williams County are urged to apply.
Public
or private voluntary agencies interested in applying for Emergency Food
and Shelter Program (EFSP) Phase 27 funds must download an application by visiting www.unitedwaywc.org and viewing the EFSP section at the bottom of the main page. The deadline for returning applications is
12:00 noon, Wednesday, February 25, 2009.
Williams County has
distributed EFSP funds previously to Northwest Ohio Community Action,
Rural Opportunities, Inc., Potter's Hands Restoration Center, Community
Compassion, and Center for Child and Family Advocacy. With the increase in federal funding from last year, the local board is looking for additional agencies to participate in the program. Agencies are not required to be a United Way partner agency.
Nationally, more than $200 million in federal funds are distributed through the EFSP.
For more
information on the EFSP, please contact Chris Malanga, Local Board
Chairman, at (419) 636-8603 or email him at cmalanga@unitedwaywc.org.
