UNITED WAY TO HOLD OPEN HOUSE FOR POTENTIAL VOLUNTEERS
Volunteers needed to help maintain Ohio Benefit Bank

Bryan, Ohio - July 16, 2008 - Since January, United Way of Williams County has offered services to low and moderate income Ohioans through a new program called the Ohio Benefit Bank.  As part of the program, trained counselors work one-on-one, side by side with an individual to fill out applications to claim benefits that the state offers, at no cost to the individual. The applications are filled out online using a computer software system.

OBB LogoThese benefits include food stamps, child care subsidy, WIC, HEAP, health care coverage and many more. The Benefit Bank also helps file for the economic stimulus and provides a free tax service for those who make under $54,000 a year.

The United Way hosts mass clinics where people can register for benefits or have their taxes done.  The organization is seeking volunteers.

"In order for our clinics to be a success, we need more volunteers to man them because we simply can not meet the needs of the public," said Kylee Collins, AmeriCorps VISTA Summer Associate.

"We are looking for people to get the training, ten hours for benefits and taxes, broken down over two days," added Collins. "After the training is complete, counselors would then be expected to volunteer at our clinics."

To get more information about becoming a volunteer for The Ohio Benefit Bank, the United Way is hosting an event on Tuesday, July 29 from 6:00p.m. until 8:00p.m. at the One Stop Job Center conference room. It is located at 228 S. Main St. in Bryan, right across the street from Lester's Diner. No RSVP needed, just attend.
