United Way reaches $50,000 milestone!

The stream of checks into our office has increased this week as people began responding to our leadership giving mailing. Leadership givers are individuals who give an individual gift of $500 or more to the United Way. These givers become members of the Thomas M. Herman Leadership Giving Society. So far, more than $22,000 in leadership gifts have been raised in Campaign 2006.

We're continuing our marketing efforts to encourage companies to conduct United Way campaigns. Campaigns are running a little slower this year for whatever reason, but we are hopeful that they will begin to pick up and that we will reach our goal.

We hope that your internal campaigns have started by now. If not, please let us know that, and start them ASAP. We'd like to get all results in by mid-December since our campaign awards will be in January next year.

  • Donuts on the Way
  • What is Donuts on the Way? It's a promotion held each year during United Way Week - this year it will be held Monday-Thursday, October 23-26, 2006. Donuts on the Way is sponsored by Chief Supermarket.

United Way holds "Donuts on the Way" in each community in Williams County. Donuts are given out in the center of town from 6:00-8:00 a.m. (or until they last!). This year's schedule includes:

    • Monday, Oct. 23rd: Bryan (in front of chamber office)
    • Tuesday, Oct. 24th: Montpelier (Sky Bank parking lot)
    • Wednesday, Oct. 25th: Pioneer and West Unity
    • Thursday, Oct. 26th: Edgerton, Edon and Stryker

This event helps to highlight United Way, and say "Thank You" to our contributors, volunteers and supporters. Please join us and get a FREE, "donut on the way" to work this week.

  • United Way Coloring Contest
  • During United Way Week - October 22-28, 2006 - we are holding a coloring contest for the kids. Entry forms are available at the libraries in Bryan, Edgerton, Edon, Pioneer, Stryker and West Unity, as well as the Montpelier school (note change of Montpelier location).

There are three prizes for each location - one per level. Each location will also have a grand prize - a chance to be a part of the United Way entry in your community's summer parade!

Entries are due on Wednesday, October 25, 2006 by closing time. Entries will be judged by local artist Lanna Pendleton Hall, and winners will be announced on Friday, October 27th. Good luck!

  • Breakfast of Champions to be held next Friday
  • The 2nd annual "Breakfast of Champions" will be held starting at 7:30 a.m. on Friday, October 27th at Mohre?s Spirited Dining in Bryan. In addition to a continental breakfast, the keynote speech by CEO Chris Malanga will focus on the United Way?s history of serving the entire county ? the progress made, challenges that lie ahead, and the direction the organization is taking.

The event will also be an opportunity for leadership givers and potential leadership givers to ask questions about the United Way and talk with members of the 2006 campaign team, including chairman Bill Pepple. The "Breakfast of Champions" is free and reservations may be made by contacting the United Way office at 419-636-8603.

  • United Way Infomercial to air on BMU and Time Warner
  • CEO Chris Malanga is the host of a 30-minute infomercial about the United Way, it?s history, it?s mission and how United Way serves every community in Williams County. As part of United Way Week, the program will air each night on Bryan Municipal Utilities Channel 4 and Time Warner Cable in Williams County. Check our website for exact times.

In addition to information on the United Way, the program features "success stories" from four United Way agencies - Dolly Parton's Imagination Library, Williams County YMCA, Hospice and NOCAC.

The program's a great way to learn more about your United Way.

  • How your dollars helped last year...
  • Tracey was struggling with many personal issues in her life. When she did her monthly breast exam, she found a mass in her left breast! She did not know where to turn.

So, Tracey called Women and Family Services for help. The first step was to ease her fears, and then go about treating her condition. A Women and Family Services nurse practitioner confirmed the mass, and referred her to a surgeon. Since Tracey didn?t have insurance, other agencies teamed up to assist. The solid mass was removed and it was found to be benign.

Tracey has come through this difficult period in her life, and is now working on resolving her personal issues. Tracey thanks the United Way and Women and Family Services for helping to keep her life on track.
