African Animal Proverbs

Zebras Talking

Every race, it seems, has animal proverbs, including the pragmatic, "A bird in hand is worth two in the bush", the inspiring "Keep a green tree in your heart and a singing bird may come" and even cautionary tales about "The hare and the tortoise".

With many cultures, and a wide variety of animals, it is not surprising that Africa also contributes its fair share.

Here are a few for starters:-

~ "A dog knows the places he is thrown food" ~ Western Kenya

~ "A donkey knows no gratitude" ~ Swahili

~ "A hyena cannot smell its own stench" ~ Kenya

~ "He flees from the roaring lion to the crouching tiger" ~ Sechuana

~ "The man's a fool whose sheep flee twice" ~ Oji

~ "The elephant never gets tired of carrying its tusks" ~ Liberia

~ "The frog does not run in the daytime for nothing" ~ Nigeria

~ "Dogs do not actually prefer bones to meat, it's just that no-one

ever gives them meat" ~ Akan, West Africa

Dive into Australia's largest ocean swim and secure your spot for Sunday, February 5, 2012.

Take up the challenge and join thousands of swimmers as they gather at Manly to compete in the 29th annual Sydney Morning Herald Cole Classic.

This year we are excited to launch a new open water swim, known as the Cole Classic Dee Why to Manly.

With a distance of approximately nine kilometres the long distance offers the perfect challenge for experienced ocean swimmers to take part in the event and test their abilities.

The 9km compliments the 1km and 2km swims, which will start from Shelly and finish at Manly Beach (subject to conditions).

The event aims to raise much needed funds for more than 600 charities, including the Manly Life Saving Club.

Once In A Blue Moon

Blue Moons 1999 to 2020With absolute certainty the sun rises daily in the east and sets in the west. And from our perspective on earth it looks pretty much the same size every day.

Not so the Moon, which waxes and wanes as it journeys around the earth and seems to appear and disappear from the sky at moments and places of its own choosing.

This makes it a hard taskmaster on which to base a calendar (though many cultures have done so) but does give rise to the interesting occurrence of the Blue Moon.

The first reference to a Blue Moon dates back to an English proverb recorded in 1528 which said:-

If they say the moon is blue

We must believe it's true

Implying that if someone in authority tells you that the moon is blue you have to believe what they say even if it is rubbish.

More recently it has acquired calendrical meanings, the most popular of which is that a blue moon is the second full moon in any calendar month.

However, an earlier definition appeared in the Maine Farmers' Almanac saying that a blue moon was the fourth full moon in any one season (winter, spring, summer or fall).

Either way, it's clear it's not an everyday occurrence so now if someone says "once in a blue moon" it has come to mean something unusual or infrequent.

Which means that years like 2011 only happen once in a blue moon.

Why? Because most years have a blue moon, but 2011 did not - neither will 2014 and 2017 - but as can be seen from the chart the majority of years have a blue moon and 1999 and 2018 both have two.

The Story of the Little Prince - By Antoine de Saint-Exupery

From last week...

Little Prince 29The fifth planet was very strange. It was the smallest of all. There was just enough room on it for a street lamp and a lamplighter.

The little prince was not able to reach any explanation of the use of a street lamp and a lamplighter, somewhere in the heavens, on a planet which had no people, and not one house.

But he said to himself, nevertheless: "It may well be that this man is absurd. But he is not so absurd as the king, the conceited man, the businessman, and the tippler. For at least his work has some meaning.

When he lights his street lamp, it is as if he brought one more star to life, or one flower. When he puts out his lamp, he sends the flower, or the star, to sleep. That is a beautiful occupation. And since it is beautiful, it is truly useful."

When he arrived on the planet he respectfully saluted the lamplighter.

"Good morning. Why have you just put out your lamp?"

"Those are the orders," replied the lamplighter. "Good morning."

"What are the orders?"

"The orders are that I put out my lamp. Good evening."

And he lighted his lamp again.

"But why have you just lighted it again?"

"Those are the orders," replied the lamplighter.

"I do not understand," said the little prince.

Little Prince 27"There is nothing to understand," said the lamplighter. "Orders are orders.

Good morning." And he put out his lamp. Then he mopped his forehead with a handkerchief decorated with red squares.

"I follow a terrible profession. In the old days it was reasonable. I put the lamp out in the morning, and in the evening I lighted it again. I had the rest of the day for relaxation and the rest of the night for sleep."

"And the orders have been changed since that time?"

"The orders have not been changed," said the lamplighter. "That is the tragedy! From year to year the planet has turned more rapidly and the orders have not been changed!"

"Then what?" asked the little prince.
