September 11, during the NAIFA Career Conference and Annual Meeting in Las Vegas, Nevada, the National Council will vote on a proposed resolution and three proposed NAIFA bylaws amendments.
The proposed resolution seeks a commitment from the national and state associations to
enter into partnership agreements. The proposed bylaws amendments would (1) change the NAIFA Board selection process to provide for the recommendation of a vetted slate of candidates; (2) give the NAIFA Board the sole authority to set national dues; and (3) increase national dues by $15.00. Further information on the resolution and amendments is available here.
Following review of the proposals, the NAIFA-Texas Board of Trustees has voted to support the partnership agreement while unanimously opposing the three bylaws amendments. The Board's position was forwarded to NAIFA President Robert Miller in a letter dated July 5. |

Frequently, an agent becomes so familiar with a process or procedure that it is assumed a long time client is also familiar. In this claim example, the client alleges the agent failed to explain that funds would be withdrawn from his variable annuity at the end of the business day versus at the time which he executed the withdrawal papers. This misunderstanding between the agent and the client led to a $10,000 market loss between the date of the request and the date paperwork was executed. The client looked to the agent for recovery of this loss and the agent acknowledged failing to explain this critical timing component of the transaction.
Risk Management Tip:
Making yourself (and your transaction) understood is an important component of your risk management program. Discussing the transaction before consummating the deal may have helped this agent. Check lists and disclosures are a good way to keep yourself focused on complicated tasks as well as routine tasks as they can act as a reminder AND documentation against a claim.
