"Gen Y Guy" and State Comptroller Susan Combs to be Featured at 84th Annual Meeting
The 84th Annual Meeting of the NAIFA-Texas delegate council will be highlighted by two distinguished Texans, each bringing keynote addresses at events on Saturday, July 18, 2009.
The first, "Gen Y Guy" Jason Ryan Dorsey of Austin, is a nationally recognized expert on Generation Y, the more than 79 million Americans born between 1977 and 1995 that are now flooding the American workforce. As seen on 20/20, 60 Minutes, The View, The Today Show and featured in Fortune Magazine and The Wallstreet Journal, Jason brings his talk "Y-Size Your Sales: How to Sell to Gen Y so they Love to Buy (and brag about their purchase on Facebook)," and will provide attendees with "Ten Things You Can Do on Monday" to begin tapping into the "Gen-Y" market at the morning session.
Additionally, NAIFA-Texas is honored to host a 5th generation Texan, State Comptroller Susan Combs, at the 2009 Legislative Luncheon. Comptroller Combs will join NAIFA-Texas in honoring members of the 81st Texas Legislature while providing her insights on Texas' economic outlook and challenges.

Industry Groups to Participate in Capitol Hill Fly-In
NAIFA-Texas members will join members of The Council of Insurance Agents and Brokers (CIAB), the Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers of America (IIABA) and the National Association of Health Underwriters (NAHU) for a special joint health care reform Capitol Hill fly-in July 14-15, 2009.
Collectively, the groups represent more than 500,000 professional health insurance advisors, agents, brokers, consultants and employee benefit specialists.
With both the House and the Senate poised to consider health care reform legislation in late July, the event provides an opportunity for industry professionals to make a meaningful contribution to the debate surrounding proposed reform legislation in Congress.
Participants will make the case to Congress regarding the important role professional health insurance advisors, agents, brokers, consultants and employee benefit specialists play in providing health care to millions of Americans.
Report on 81st Regular Session of Legislature: "What They Did" and "What They Did Not Do" NAIFA-Texas CEO and Chief Legislative Officer Des Taylor has provided NAIFA-Texas members a Capitol Report, listing what lawmakers did and did not do during the 140-day regular session of the 81st Texas Legislature prior to adjournment Sine Die June 1, 2009. Click here to view the report.
Included on the list of lost legislation is reauthorization of the Texas Department of Insurance which may require a special session for this agency, as well as the Texas Department of Transportation, also under sunset review this year, to continue their normal operations. NAIFA-Texas appreciates the prompt responses from members and key contacts for legislators to the Action Alerts issued during the hectic session that saw an unprecedented number of bills filed that impacted insurance agents and financial advisors.
Will Guaranty Cap be In Sunset Bill? NAIFA-TX's amendment to increase the protections for consumers from $100,000 to $250,000 for the present value of annuities under the state's guaranty law would fit nicely as part of a sunset bill to renew TDI, according to NAIFA-TX CEO Des Taylor. In the regular session that adjourned June 1, the measure to increase the cap for annuities fell victim, along with other amendments to the insurance reform bill, to delay tactics by lawmakers who were opposed to consideration of a voter ID bill which had been placed on the House calendar ahead of the TDI bill, killing its chances of passage. Now, with a special session looming, there is hope that language patterned after the NAIC model act can be incorporated in the bill to extend TDI.
NAIFA-TX to Bid Fond Farewell to Chris Williston
Bringing to a close three productive years as executive assistant and director of communications, Chris Williston announced his resignation from the staff effective June 30, 2009 to accept a new career opportunity at the Independent Bankers Association of Texas (IBAT).
"Chris leaves his position with us but carries forward the many friendships established at NAIFA-Texas," said CEO Des Taylor who called Williston "a committed team player who leaves us a better, more professional organization than before." Taylor added that Chris plans to be on hand for the July TLRT Roundup and Annual Meeting, affording NAIFA-Texas members an opportunity to extend first-hand their thanks and best wishes.
Mineola Currey Devine Passes Away June 6 Services celebrating the remarkable life of the mother of NAIFA President-elect Tom Currey were held June 13, 2009 in Grand Prairie, Texas. Born May 26, 1923, in Cameron, Texas, Mineola Ford Currey Devine was a school teacher by profession. She continued her teaching/mentoring career up until several years ago, receiving numerous awards in recognition of her talents and reflective of the affection that those whose lives she touched held for her. Survivors in addition to Tom and daughter-in-law Charlotte include son Larry and daughter-in-law Belinda, five grandsons and one great grandson.
Representing NAIFA at the memorial services were Dr. Susan Waters, NAIFA Deputy CEO, Washington, D.C., and Des Taylor, NAIFA-TX CEO.
