Advocacy in Action
Guaranty Association Bill Gets Senate OK As time continues to tick down on the 81st Regular Session of the Texas Legislature and the record number of bills filed in the House and Senate, lawmakers are scrambling to move their bills along before the June 1 adjournment.
On Monday, May 11, 2009, the Senate approved S.B. 1493 (Williams, R-The Woodlands) to increase the protections under the Texas Guaranty law from $100,000 to $250,000 for the present value of annuities.
With the unanimous support of the Senate, the bill now goes to the House of Representatives where it must be approved before the session adjourns.
S.B. 1493 is just one of the many bills carrying a potential impact for agents and financial advisors that NAIFA-Texas is following. For daily legislative updates between now and the end of the session please visit www.naifa-texas.org.
A full legislative recap will be featured in the June eNewsletter.
Agents, Brokers and Consumers of Health Insurance at Risk with Government Plan The Obama Administration is actively working with Congress and interested parties to craft a major health care proposal to replace or supplant the private industry in the sale and delivery of health insurance. "A public plan is something that's sponsored by the government, and therefore has very low or almost nonexistent administrative costs," according to recent comments by Nancy-Ann DeParle, counselor to the President. She went on to say that "[the government plan] doesn't have the need to have brokers out selling; it wouldn't have the need to have a lot of costs and profits the way private plans would. So it has that advantage."
The proposal has the potential of eliminating or severely curtailing the agent/broker role in health insurance sales. The entire debate, with details still being developed, is on a fast track with draft legislation expected in late May and votes as early as July, in the Senate, and late summer or early fall in the House.
NAIFA-Texas members are urged to standby and be ready to respond quickly to Action Alerts in the face of governmental intervention in the insurance industry like never before.
