NAIFA-TX PAC Engaged in Busy Election Season

With the general election less than one month away, the NAIFA-Texas Political Action Committee has authorized almost $40,000 in political contributions to office holders and candidates for the Texas House, Senate and statewide offices.

"We always emphasize the importance of PAC contributions in the political process," said T. Leslie Littleton, LUTCF, CLU, NAIFA-Texas PAC Chair, "and local association leaders are rising to the challenge of the election season by requesting contributions for their area lawmakers."  He added, "this is how relationships are formed and strengthened, allowing us to have a strong grassroots advocacy network."

Candidates are eligible to receive contributions up until thirty days before the beginning of the Texas Legislative Session on January 13, 2009.

If you do not currently support NAIFA-Texas PAC, please consider becoming a contributor by completing this form.

Talley Elected to the NAIFA-Texas Board

Jason B. Talley, LUTCF of NAIFA-San Antonio was elected to the NAIFA-Texas Board of Directors, filling an unexpired term as regional director overseeing Austin, San Antonio and Corpus Christi.

Talley, a fourteen year veteran of the insurance industry, was unanimously approved by the NAIFA-Texas Board of Directors.  "Jason has brought exceptional leadership to NAIFA-San Antonio, and his strong understanding of the insurance and financial services industry, paired with his acuity for government affairs, will help NAIFA-Texas fill its primary objective of advocacy," said Des M. Taylor, J.D., NAIFA-Texas CEO.

In addition to his industry involvement, Talley is a member of the First Baptist Church of Floresville, where he serves as the Personnel Committee Chairman.  He is also a member of the Texas Leaders Round Table, the Association of Heath Insurance Advisors, the National Association of Health Underwriters, and a past president of both the Floresville Chamber of Commerce and the Floresville Economic Development Corporation.

Talley's service on the NAIFA-Texas Board begins immediately, with his first board meeting slated for late October.

Members Capitalize on Governor's Proclamation

Several NAIFA-Texas members seized upon the opportunity provided by Governor Rick Perry's proclamation of September 2008 as Life Insurance Awareness Month to encourage Texans to examine their current life insurance coverage and act accordingly to protect their families from financial hardship.

Martha Hall of NAIFA-Wichita Falls penned an article in the business section of the Wichita Falls Times Record News, urging readers to look past the discomfort that comes with buying life insurance and make an investment in their family's future.  The article is available online, here.

NAIFA-San Antonio President Robert Kinnally, CLTC, IAR and Immediate Past President Jason Talley, LUTCF took to the airwaves, appearing on a local morning news program to talk about the different types of life insurance and to offer viewers tips on what to look for when buying a policy.  The video is available online, here.

Licensing Bill Stalled Amidst Bailout Chaos
The National Association of Registered Agents and Brokers (NARAB) Reform Act of 2008, which would provide a mechanism for licensing, continuing education and other insurance producer qualification requirements that can be adopted on a multi-state basis, advanced to the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs after being approved by the House on September 17, 2008.

With the chaos in Congress caused by the government bailout of the financial services industry, the bill was not placed on the committee calendar before the Congress went into recess earlier this month.

Throughout the Congressional session NAIFA has supported the enactment of NARAB II because it would allow producers who are licensed to operate in multiple states to comply with a single set of non-resident licensing and continuing education rules.

Ehlers Continues Family Tradition
For 25 years, the NAIFA convention has begun with a proud display of patriotism through the Parade of States Ceremony.  As each state in the NAIFA federation is listed, members from across the country traverse the main platform waving proudly their state flags.  Although the ceremony is now considered a staple of the NAIFA convention, it only began because of the contributions of a few Texans.

Robert A. Ehlers of NAIFA-Houston began the ceremony in 1982.  After unsuccessfully attempting to secure flags for use from the host hotel, Ehlers and then NALU President John Neighbors of NAIFA-Houston were forced to rent three American flags for display.  However, the flags were dirty, and Ehlers wanted to make sure that in the future, the flags were treated with respect and dignity.

That fall, the NALU board appointed Ehlers as the NALU vexillologist - the standard bearer of the flags.  In 1983, Ehlers asked each state association to contribute a 3 x 5 foot flag to be displayed at the convention.  NALU also bought 4 x 6 foot American and Canadian flags.

NAIFA has been using the same flags ever since.  Although once housed in the Ehlers's garage, and later in the NAIFA-Texas office, they are now warehoused in Maryland, near the NAIFA office.

This year, Stephen E. Ehlers, LUTCF, CEP, CSA oversaw the rehearsal and execution of the state flag parade, continuing the tradition begun by his father and preserving a tradition that exemplifies the unity of the NAIFA federation and the resolve of the American spirit.

A Message from Membership Chair Alyson Guest

Hello Members!!

I know you are inundated with emails and mail from NAIFA regarding member benefits, advocacy information, professional development opportunities and so on, but this goes to show you that it PAYS to belong!  The benefits of membership far exceed the cost of your dues.  If you would like a breakdown in dollars call me, and I will work through it with you.  My favorite member benefit is advocacy.   I can also put a dollar amount on that benefit -my income!   If the people at NAIFA-Texas and NAIFA didn't work on our behalf everyday, my business practice would look very different or I may not be in practice at all.   Our clients' financial security and futures would suffer without our great association.  When I explain this to my clients, they are very grateful for the great work we do in our association.  Remember, it's smart to belong!    Have a great month!
