From the Directors

It was another great week at Camp and it made us think that unlike the way time is kept in many sports, we prefer the way it is done in soccer, which counts up to the end of a game rather than down.  We have cherished each day at Camp and have been counting up to Week 8, when we will enjoy the friendly competition of Maccabiah Color War and our Week 8 Camp Shalom show.  We have enjoyed so many awesome activities, visitations, skating parties, late stays, overnights, carnivals, concerts, Israel days, Ruach days, camp shows, trips, and more.  We hope that your child has enjoyed the summer and will be excited to return again in 2012.  Shortly we will be sending out our online evaluations.  Please take a few minutes to share with us your impressions of Camp.  We strive to be the best camp anywhere, but always believe we can be even better, especially with your feedback!

We also want to encourage you to be a part of the Katz JCC year-round - think of it as Camp 365!  Are you familiar with our after-camp playdays and activities, the Just 4 Kids afterschool program, Junior Maccabi Basketball, Lenny Krayzelburg Swim Academy swim lessons, Kidsland, vacation programs, and more?  And the JCC is not just for kids!  There is a state-of-the-art fitness center that offers hundreds of free classes each week, sports leagues, programs such as the Festival of Arts, Books and Culture and Jewish Film Festival, an awesome event called JCC Under the Sea at the Adventure Aquarium (which we help run!), and much more.  So just because the summer has to end, the fun and excitement can last year-round!  You can have the ULTIMATE experience at our Katz JCC - you belong here!

Enjoy your weekend and we'll be back for week #8!

Lenny Krayzelburg Visits Camp!

Our inaugural summer of the  The Lenny Krayzelburg Swim Academy went  "swimmingly".

Our 1600 Campers, lifeguards, and staff really embraced the new program's great curriculum that first emphasizes water safety, and then works on refining swim strokes.
Just last week, Lenny, a four-time US Olympic Gold Medalist, made a personal appearance at Medford to see the program in action.  Lenny had such high praise for our water staff as well as our campers when he saw his program in action.  As a special treat, Lenny brought his medals and posed for pictures with many of our campers, who were very excited to meet him!

Since we began this new program, the campers are clearly more water safe and confident in their abilities. This week during free swim I saw something truly heartwarming - a camper was teaching her friend how to streamline in the water, using proper hand and body position. It is so rewarding to see that the skills are really sticking with our campers, and that they are eager to share them with their friends.

There is also a colorful change in our program that our campers are most excited about - their swim caps!  As campers advance through the program, they earn a new cap color -and boy have they been progressing through the different cap colors!  The caps also have a safety purpose - it helps our lifeguards monitor where campers belong in the pool, based on their level of swimming.

With so many campers now passionate about swimming, we want to continue to educate them and help them improve during the school year.  The Lenny Krayzelburg Swim Academy is available year-round at the Katz JCC, plus we have a swim team your child can be part of!

All new camp families who are not already enrolled in the program at the Katz JCC will receive a 20% discount on the first three months of lessons.  This discount also applies to any swimmer who hasn't taken lessons for six months or more at the JCC, too.  You can contact us at the JCC at infoLKSA@jfedsnj.org.

See you at the JCC!

Hhilltopilltop Happenings!

Week 7 was EXPLOSIVE!  Our Little Scientists experimented with soda and mentos to create a volcanic eruption - you should have seen the campers' reactions! In Arts & Crafts, campers created beautiful child-shaped friendship book marks decorated with colorful markers and yarn. In gymnastics, campers paired up with a friend on the mats as they practiced their stretching exercises, as well as obstacle courses which consisted of a variation of up the stairs, roll down mat, log roll, balance beam and parallel bars.  What gymnasts we have created!  Gan Yeladim kept up with the friendship theme, making "friendship plaques" for each camper and listing their friends' "friendship characteristics" on the plaque. After reading the Israeli writer Etgar Keret's story "Glittery Eyes", Kosher Cooking baked and decorated their very own "Glittery Eyes" cupcakes, and enjoyed eating them while discussing the story.  Hilltoppers were very excited to hike around camp on a Nature walk and collecting different leaves and exploring nature.

Camp Hilltop performed their "You've Got a Friend in Me" show last night, -  it was so much fun and great to see so many Hilltop families and friends.  Click here to view show photos!

Today we broke Maccabiah Color War and announced the teams for next week: Red - Mario Brothers, Blue - Sonic, Green - Donkey Kong, and Yellow - Pac Man. Let the games begin!!! Look for an unforgettable Maccabiah Color War next week!

Week 7 already?  It is hard to believe!  It was a busy week all around camp.  In Cooking, we made our very own soft pretzels from scratch.  In Nature, the children took nature walks and personalized our blueberry trail with large decorated rocks.  In Ceramics, we created beautiful leaves and in arts and crafts the campers made adorable "people" pots to plant seeds.  The tennis racquets have been in full swing as our campers skill levels have advanced - the courts are heating up!  The other courts at camp, gaga, continue to be filled with smiles, laughter and enthusiasm as it is always the favorite sport!  Our club activities and instructional swim are over, as we prepare for our special Week 8 - Maccabiah Color War schedule.  Look for your camper's schedule to come home on Monday.

"School House Rock, Jr." theater production hits the stage this Monday evening at 7:00 pm at the Katz JCC in Cherry Hill. Our campers are ready to sing and dance their hearts out on stage.  Our scenery and props are awesome and were created by our very own set production club.  "Break a leg" to all the show performers!
We look forward to an amazing week eight!

Shabbat Shalom!

Amazing in Camp Aaron

Week 7 has been super busy around Camp Aaron!  Our theater majors and performing dancers put the finishing touches on their final summer performance that took place Wednesday evening at the Katz JCC.   Friends and family were thrilled by our "Night of 63 Stars"!  Click here to view photos of the show.  Click here to view videos from the show

The competitive sports final indoor soccer match had a huge audience of sports fans and supporters in our Aaron hockey court.  Great athletic moments abounded as the teams displayed great skill and sportsmanship. Our Tavor campers hit the road on Thursday for their day trip to Ocean City.  After a day on the beach & boardwalk, campers ate dinner at the Margate JCC, stayed over at our own Katz JCC and were back at Medford in time for breakfast Friday morning, ready for a full day of  camp.

Shabbat began with an extra special performance by our Aaron guitar classes followed by our performing dancers, and it concluded with a bang as we broke Maccabiah Color War 2011, much to everyone's surprise!  Camp Aaron can't wait to start Week 8 with lots of Maccabiah excitement!

Have a great weekend!  Shabbat Shalom!

Here we go again!

It was another wet and wild week in Chaverim!  We hit Six Flags Great Adventure, Ocean City, Thundering Surf Water Park, the Casino Pier, and Go Vertical and loved it!  Next week is our final trip to Virginia, where we get to go to Busch Gardens, Kings Dominion, a ghost tour of Williamsburg and Water Country USA.  What a way to end the summer!

gesherGesher Gab

Gesher had a great seventh week at camp.  We continued our wonderful time with our campers and learned what it takes to be a great counselor. Then on Wednesday, we went to Wildwood where we enjoyed the Splash Zone and the Boardwalk.  Next Wednesday, Gesher heads to Hershey Park for the day, followed by our second overnight.  We are excited for a fun day, then even more fun back at Katz JCC where we will enjoy a special "end of summer" awards ceremony and hanging out!

P.S. Get ready for COLOR WAR next week...what color and team will you be representing?

tipsTips on Tipping -  Staff Recognition

Over the years, many of our parents have asked how they can express their appreciation to various staff members.  While tipping is certainly not required, tips are an appropriate way to recognize those staff members who have contributed toward the success of your child's summer experience.  Below is a guide that may serve helpful.  For exceptional performance, parents are welcome to exceed these amounts.

Senior Counselor - $25-$40

Assistant Senior Counselor - $20-$30

Junior Counselor - $15-$25

Counselor Assistant - $10-$20

CIT - $10-$15
Bus Counselor - $10-$20

Bus Driver - $10-$15

Parents may also consider tipping swim instructors or daycare staff who they felt made an impact in their child's camp experience.

* Please note that Camp recognizes that some parents believe that tipping is a necessary part of recognizing and showing appreciation to staff, some think tipping should be eliminated, and some believe that the tipping guidelines are too low.  The Camp Committee has considered all of these options and leaves it to parents to determine what works best for them.
