THAT'S WHAT FRIENDS ARE FOR

This summer, our theme
"That's What Friends Are For" is about friendship and its challenges, rewards, and many different forms.  Camp is the ideal place to reflect on friendship, and our specialists and counselors are applying Jewish and secular notions of friendship to our daily activities at camp.  To the extent that camp works magic, as many of us believe we do, it happens because we keep our campers for more than just a few weeks for just one summer - our campers return year after year and we get to touch their lives at different ages and stages, into middle school, past bar mitzvah, into high school, and even into college and young adulthood.  Friendship is the reason that they return!

An article from Kolot magazine this past fall was entitled Make Yourself a Friend at a Jewish Summer Camp.  It reviewed a study commissioned by the Avi Chai Foundation that was to focus on camps as Jewish educational institutions. What actually emerged was an understanding of the power of friendships and how the formation of friendships can change the Jewish life trajectory of a camper or counselor.  The study showed that the most important factor in whether a camper returns to Camp is his or her camp friends - such is the power of friendships.  A reanalysis of data from the 2000 National Jewish Population Study suggests that the Jewish density of someone's high school social circle is directly correlated with his or her adult Jewish life, including marriage choice.  As parents of campers ourselves, we are not thinking about our children's marriage choices.  But we find it interesting to read that who your friends are now can make a big difference in the future.

We know that relationships are central to our success and if there are good friends and a strong sense of community - camp spirit (ruach) - campers and staff will return and alumni will stay connected for years, even choosing to send their own kids (and grandkids!) to the Camp they attended.  The JCC Camps at Medford has a rich history and tradition, and we have 1st, 2nd and even 3rd generation campers at Camp!  We hope you and your children are enjoying Camp, and we look forward to everyone being part of our Camp family for generations to come!

Enjoy your weekend and we will see you next week!!

B'Shalom,

HILLTOPHilltop Happenings

Hilltop is Hoppin'

Week two was HOT, HOT, HOT.....as our campers got acclimated in their new swim groups and looked so cute in their swim caps.
  • Kosher cooking was "Cooking up Friendships" where we enjoyed mixing and baking smores and discussing with specialist Laurie how sweet friendship's are.  The recipe included chocolate chip cookie dough, graham crackers, and marshmallow topped off with chocolate drizzle.
  • Our Little Scientists explored their five senses this week and learned how to gather information without being able to use their eyes, ears or nose.
  • Usable Art had Sara help us design wooden triangle spinning tops, which required fitting several different pieces together - we talked about how there are many different kinds of friendships and how they all fit together to create one big happy bunk (like our wooden tops).
  • At Gan Yeladim our Hilltoppers made dog tags inscribed with the Hebrew word אַהֲבָה (Ahava - the Hebrew word for love) and traded their dog tags with their bunkmates to show their friendship.
  • Arts and Crafts decorated 3-D picture frame cubes which can be used to display our campers' favorite camp photos from this summer.
  • Our Games specialist, Julie, created fun with good, old fashioned games like Simon Says, Follow the Leader, and Red Light, Green Light.
  • With Tama our Nature Specialist, campers are anxiously awaiting the arrival of the lady bug larvae and caterpillars and are excited to observe the life cycle of a ladybug and butterfly.  We also voted on naming our Nature animals and the results are in: Ducks: Quackers and Donald; Rooster: Wilson; Pig: Bob; Goats: Graty and Hip Hop; Frog: Kermit; Lizard: Lizzy; Fish: Bubbles, Nemo, Fruity, Tuna, Swimmy and Bones.
  • On our Hilltop sports fields the skill of the week in soccer was how to pass the ball to their team mates. During kickball the campers practiced catching and kicking the ball to each other. Both activities were followed up with a "Friendly" scrimmage.
Next week we will welcome back Yosi, an award winning children's recording artist, who will get our campers up and moving! We will also welcome our Kefli and Shoresh families for visitation.
Shabbat Shalom!

Happy in the Heat

Greetings from Camp Shalom!  Things at camp are hot this week, and not just the weather!

Camp activities are now in full swing:

  • Auditions have started for our Camp Shalom Show.  This year's production will be "School House Rock, Jr."  and will be a sweet treat for our theater club kids to perform for their families on August 15th at the JCC in Cherry Hill.
  • In Nature the campers especially enjoyed meeting our new animal friends and the votes are in: our pot belly pig's official name is "Lazy Smurf", and our 2 donkeys have been named "Snowball," and "Sancho."   We have been hiking all around camp exploring our nature trails and we are painting rocks with our names to leave our mark on our blueberry trail for all our future campers to see.
  • In Sports, our campers are learning teamwork and honing their athletic abilities with much enthusiasm.   Beach newcombe continues to be a favorite at camp as campers have fun wiggling their toes in the sand.   Let's not forget gaga, which is the all-time favorite sport at camp.
  • In Kosher Cooking the campers enjoyed celebrating July 4th by making, decorating, and eating "American sparkler firework" cookies!  They were delicious!
  • Arts and Crafts continued with our friendship theme of painting beautiful mirrors that were creations of "reflections of themselves."
  • ·Digi-photo strolled around camp practicing the zoom features on their cameras by playing a mystery photo game.
Just a friendly reminder - Masada and Dimona have their late stay at the International Sports Center in Cherry Hill on Wednesday, July 13!!  Have a great weekend - Shabbat Shalom!!!

Swingin' into Summer!

Camp Aaron was still flying high after the July 4th holiday celebrations, and we happily reconnected on Tuesday and got back into the swing of the Camp Aaron excitement.

Here's some of what's going on:
  • Our performing dance and theater majors are busy rehearsing for their Week 4 "Fiddler on the Roof Jr." performance  at the JCC on Tuesday, July 19, 7 pm. Our young stars are sure to impress their friends and families that night!
  • Competitive sports teams are chosen and the campers are excited to show their skills on our fields.
  • With all the heat being generated around camp, everyone is loving taking a dip in the Aaron pool, making a huge splash off our diving board and water slide, and enjoying our inflatables in the lake.
  • Gilad campers are eagerly making plans for their overnight on Thursday, July 14.  Lots of great activities will fill their evening, ending with a campfire and s'mores making.  It's a great opportunity for our youngest Camp Aaron campers to take part in this special Camp Aaron rite of passage.  Parents can print out a permission slip for the overnight online and send it in to camp with their camper next week.
We can't wait to see everyone on Monday for another great week of Camp Aaron excitement!

Gesher is Groovy!

CIT's are Chillin' in the Heat!

gesherOur Gesher CITs completed another hot but fun-filled week at camp. They have been receiving continued guidance and support from their bunk counselors, division heads and CIT Staff. We have been impressed with the CITs commitment to step up when needed and with their ideas and leadership skills during our weekly Shabbat. Our trip this week was to Hurricane Harbor. The temperature on Thursday made it a perfect day to go to a water park where a refreshing, relaxing time was had by all, and next week we are excited for Ocean City.  Also next week, the CITs will participate in recreational activities led by Gesher staff one period a day, such as Gesher slugball, gaga, soccer, and more! Week 3 here we come!

Shabbat Shalom!
