FROM THE DIRECTORS Tradition and Change Many of you know that we were once campers at the JCC Camps at Medford a bunch of years ago. We swam in the lake (no pools), ate outside (no lunchroom) and enjoyed camp in what was called a "rustic setting." Despite few modern conveniences, most have fond memories of these times. It was somewhat painful for us when, as Directors, we helped dismantle the darkroom at camp, but it finally clicked that kids no longer knew what film was... Sad but true. So now we have pools, splashparks, digital cameras, mini golf, sledding slopes, ropes course, lake inflatables, pedal boats, zip lines, pedal bikes, and more, which our campers no doubt enjoy. And instead of sending home lots of flyers, and pictures once a year, we now use email blasts, online newsletters, Facebook and Twitter (are you a fan and a follower yet?), and we post photos online weekly if not more. Our former campers are now counselors and staff, and yes, even camp parents and grandparents. The essence of Camp is still the same. We are an outdoor camp with trees, sand and yes, some bugs and frogs. Our campers continue to come off the camp bus smiling and happy and leave camp smiling and sweaty, with a little more sand in their shoes than they started with. At our Camp, we strive to instill a sense of tradition rooted in Jewish values and the feeling that we are all part of the JCC Camp family for life. We are grateful that you have chosen to be a part of it. Did you hear that we just received a certificate as the Courier Post Readers Choice 2011 Best of South Jersey Day Camp? We thank you for that vote of support! The summer is off to a great start and we are ready for more! Enjoy your holiday weekend and we will see you next week!

Swim Stuff
A Note from Lenny Krayzelburg Swim Academy (LKSA)
Happy Friday!
You may know us from the Katz JCC Health & Wellness Department. We are here at Camp excited to bring the Lenny Krayzelburg Swim Academy (LKSA) program to your campers. The system we are using is a very different model than before, and one we feel is better overall. The levels and the requirements for each are somewhat different. Click here to read the Parent Guide.
Aaron and Deena spoke of tradition and change in their article above and it applies here as well. Change is not always easy but will be worth it in the end. While the old camp swim program was excellent, our new LKSA program is even stronger. Our swim instructors went through an unprecedented 20 hours of training, so that they are best equipped to teach our campers to be safe swimmers.
The essence of the program, and one that will be a challenge to even our most experienced swimmers, is the "unsinkable back float." Once a child masters this, they will be more water safe than ever before, and will move up levels more easily. The back float is a key element of the LKSA program and we cannot bypass it and move people forward without that skill being mastered. Campers placed in lower levels that they may have expected will not be deterred from swimming and will be safer for it if they ever find themselves in a survival situation in the course of their lives.
If you feel that your child is incorrectly placed, please let us know! Our procedure is that we will discuss with the pool director why a child was placed in a specific level and we will go over that with you. We are more than willing to retest a child to insure that they are appropriately placed and we will let you know the results of this retest.
We thank you for your cooperation as we get things going - as we said, change can be a challenge. Please trust that it will be worth it in the end! Thanks and have a safe and enjoyable 4th of July Weekend!

Hilltop Happenings
Welcome New Campers
Finally camp is here!
Remembering old friends
Isn't it great to be back at camp
Everyone is smiling
New friendships
Delicious cookies created at kosher cooking
Sun, sun, sun
Hot, hot, hot
Ice cream and
Popsicles are the best!
Camp Hilltop is on its way to another great summer! Old friendships were rekindled and new ones are beginning.
We have lots of great activities at Camp Hilltop! Useable Arts is off to a colorful start by tie-dying journals for campers to detail their memories of the 2011 summer. In Nature, campers designed bug jars to keep any fireflies or insect friends they find, explored for tiny animals and insects, and helped name the new little critters in our nature hut.
In Gan Yeladim the campers made Tzedakah banks and were very excited to talk about helping other children in need. Part of tzedakah collected at Shabbat will be donated to an Israeli organization called "Birthday Angels," which makes it possible for Israeli children in need to have their own birthday celebration. Our "Little Scientists" were challenged to mix together the primary colors to create all the colors of the rainbow, and to see that children are all different like the colors of the rainbow but can be all mixed together to make new friendships! The Sports Fields were in full swing with campers learning new skills and drills, led by new Sports Director Joseph Reid, a Physical Education teacher for many years. Our campers smiled all the way until Friday, which was picture day! Have a wonderful Fourth of July Weekend!

Sizzlin' in Shalom
Smiles, friendship, and fun is what Camp Shalom is all about! Our campers have begun making new friends and welcoming back old friends. How perfect, since our theme this summer is friendship! We have been hard at work getting to know each other! In Arts and Crafts the campers are making masks that mimic their own features and personality traits and sharing them with their bunkmates. Digital Photography has been going on scavenger hunts and taking pictures of things they like about camp. Games has been playing "getting to know you" games so the campers learn about each other. Mad Science experimented and learned about the effects of UV rays by working with special beads that change color when exposed to sunlight, and campers finished their lesson by making bracelets to help them remember the effects of the sun. At the Lake we are enjoying our beautiful, paddle boats and our fabulous lake inflatables. Tennis is in full swing and the Shalom campers love our tennis courts. Have a wonderful, happy July 4thand we look forward to a spectacular second week in Camp Shalom.

Action Packed Aaron
Exciting Start
From a quick walk around Camp Aaron, it looks as though the snowy winter never happened! Camp got off to an exciting start with staff introductions and welcomes in the Camp Aaron amphitheater. Tours were given to campers who are new to our part of the JCC complex as the rest of the campers excitedly rushed to their chosen activities. In a blink of an eye, potter's wheels were spinning, gaga games were being played and Summer 2011 memories were already being made. Lunch was an exciting time with campers getting to know their bunkmates and settling into an exciting summer of fun. We are looking forward to what new experiences and surprises await Camp Aaron in the upcoming weeks! Hope everyone enjoys the holiday weekend, and we can't wait to see everyone back on Tuesday!
Shabbat Shalom!

Gesher CIT's
CIT's are off and running
Our Gesher CIT's had a wonderful first week of camp. We are amazed how quickly the CITs have taken initiative and become involved with their assignments. The rainy weather on the second day didn't discourage or stop the enthusiasm and energy that permeated camp during the first week. Our trip destination this week was to "The Funplex". The go-karts seemed to be the favorite activity for most. The arcade was also a hit; as all were trying to get as many tickets as possible for prizes. Off Period Passes started Thursday, and all the CIT's were thrilled. Reminder, there is NO CAMP Monday, July 4th for the holiday. We are looking forward to an amazing week two at camp!
Shabbat Shalom,
