New Product! SaltStick debuts at Triple Sports
A day or so before Ironman Arizona, a bespectacled man by the name of Jonathan Toker paid us a visit. He carried With him SaltStick Electrolyte Capsules, an electrolyte replacement that he had developed. Of all the electrolyte replacement products on the market, he said, none actually put back in what sweat dragged out during training and racing sessions. None, that is, except for SaltStick. Made sense to us. So, now we carry SaltStick Electrolyte Capsules. Take them for a spin this summer and see what you think.

Runners have long debated which is better: Treadmill or Pavement. Researchers weigh in.
The New York Times recently took on a controversial topic: pavement vs. treadmill. We know we have a strong preference for one over the other - most avid runners do - but the NYT wanted to know: how do the two differ in producing results?
"According to several studies," the Times wrote, "the answer is not so simple. Researchers have found in general that while outdoor running tends to promote a more intense exercise, running on a treadmill helps reduce the likelihood of injury, and thus may allow some people to run longer and farther."
The Times article cites studies that have found "outdoor running burns about 5 percent more calories than treadmills do, in part because there is greater wind resistance and no assistance from the treadmill belt. Some studies show, for example, that when adults are allowed to set their own paces on treadmills and on tracks, they move more slowly and with shorter strides when they train on treadmills."
But the other side of the debate is this: Treadmills offer a softer landing surface, and the Times says other studies show that treadmill runners suffer few stress injuries in the legs because of this.
"One study published in 2003 in the British journal of sports medicine, for example, analyzed a group of runners and found significantly higher rates of bone strain and tension during pavement running than during treadmill running, particularly in the tibia, or shinbone," the Times wrote. "This increased strain can heighten the risk of stress fractures by more than 50 percent, the study found."
The bottom line: "Studies suggest that running on pavement generally burns slightly more calories, but also raises the risk of stress fractures." |
| Arizona Triathlete Competes in China

Local athlete Clay Blair was the only Arizonan to register - let alone cross the finish line - at the inaugural Ironman China. Blair, who trains with Gage Total Training, battled a lengthy flight and humid, 90 degree weather to finish the historic event. Congrats!

Triple Sports Wetsuit Rental

Need a wetsuit but not ready to buy? We've got you covered with the Valley's largest stock of rental wetsuits.
We rent both men's and women's suits from Zoot and Blue 70 - both full sleeve and sleeveless - and the best part is we take the time to fit you to your rental suit so you can perform at your very best on race day.
Here's how it works: Drop by the shop to try on and reserve a wetsuit - for larger events we recommend doing this a few weeks in advance. We'll put your name on THAT suit for you to pick up prior to race day.
Rentals are $45 for 4 days. You can buy extra days for $10 or rent for a week for $75.
Not sure if you want to rent or buy? It might help to know that you can apply your rental fee to a purchase of any wetsuit within 30 days of your rental. Yep, now that's a great deal! Available to Arizona residents only at this time - no shipping option available.
