Beer is better than water when it comes to rehydrating the body after exercise.

That's the latest, anyway, from a group of researchers at Granada University in Spain who say carbon dioxide in beer helps quench thirst more quickly than water, while beer's carbohydrates replace calories lost during physical exertion.

Based on the group's studies, the London Daily Mail said researchers have recommended moderate consumption of beer - 500ml a day for men or 250ml for women - as part of an athlete's diet.

The ingredients of beer - which include malted barley, hops and yeast -are, surprisingly, rich sources of vitamins and minerals, according to the
Mail.

Dr James Betts, an expert in post-exercise rehydration at Bath University, told the Daily Mail: "People think of alcohol as being a diuretic, but if
you are already hydrated, a small amount of beer could be a way of getting the fluid in."

Still, Betts says the best way to rehydrate after exercise is with a sports drink containing sugars, water and salt.

New Feature! Product Review
Giro Advantage 2
Wilson

By Bill Wilson, USAT Lev I Coach

Camelback Coaching

Aero helmets have been around since the late 80s/early 90s. Back then Giro made a lycra helmet covered helmet with a tear dropped shape that was all the rage in the old USTS triathlon series. In the mid to late 90s the aero helmet became less popular as manufacturers spent more time and energy into developing molded, light, and well vented helmets like the Giro Pneumo and Atmos. Over the last 5 years the aero helmet has seen a re-birth with companies like Louis Garneau, Specialized, and Giro all coming out with aero  helmets to feed the need for speed.

The Giro Advantage 2 was one of the most eagerly awaited helmets as the looks are rather appealing and it was, after all, the helmet that was based on the all of the work done by Lance Armstrong's US Postal/Discovery team and support crew. Aero helmets have become more and more popular over the last 3 years and judging by the numbers of aero helmets at IM Hawaii this year the hype must have something behind it.

I was rather skeptical

of aero helmets as I thought the time gains were marginal and the trade off in being too hot would be too much. With the release of the Advantage 2 I decided to see what all the fuss was about.

First I did some research to see what actual wind tunnel

tests have shown. There is not a lot of data publicly published, but what I did find was that aero helmets can save about 1:30-3 min off of a 40k split and are more aerodynamic in any position than a Giro Atmos helmet. This is presumably due to the lack of vents.

One of the myths about aero

helmets is that you have to hold them in a position so that the tail rests right o the riders back in order to gain any advantage over a regularly vented helmet. John Cobb an others have tested this and their data shows that this is not true. An aero helmet with the tail pointed straight in the air is still more aero than a vented helmet. It is the most aerodynamic when the tail is resting against the rider's back but is still more aero than a regular helmet in any other position.

Armed with the wind tunnel data, I bought my Giro Advantage 2 and started to do some testing. The first thing I noticed after picking up the helmet was that it is very light. It only weighs 310 grams, which is 35 grams more than my Atmos. In my hands I could not feel the difference in weight.

After putting on the helmet the second thing I noticed was how long it has

been since I had a helmet that covered my ears. Having played football in my youth and the later as a helicopter pilot in the Navy I was used to the reverberating sound that wearing a helmet that covers your ears can cause.

The Advantage 2 brought these sensations back. The ear covers cause the sound to be amplified and takes some getting used to. It is not a negative characteristic just different than what most of us are used to when wearing a helmet.

Out on the road the immediate sensation was one of speed. I know that sounds ridiculous but the helmet gives a sense of speed due to the amplified ambient. It also has a tendency to make you want to keep your head up and the tail down on your back since the aerodynamic pressures are felt any time you move your head out of the optimal position. OK, so I felt fast wearing the helmet but big deal. That feeling can be caused by any number of things. On to some semi- empirical testing ...

The first test I did was to roll down a mile long hill that is part of a weekly ride I do. I normally coast down this hill at 28mph with my hands in the hoods and feet at 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock.  With the Advantage 2, I coasted down the same hill at 29-30mph. Of course, there may have been other factors involved but I consistently coasted down the hill 1-2 mph faster than my Atmos helmet.

The second test was a little more useful. I do a 27 mile tempo ride each week over the same course. I use a SRM power meter to gauge my effort and study afterwards. Riding the same ride on multiple occasions I usually ride at 200 watts (normalized) and complete the ride in about 1:30-1:32. This includes a warm up and warm down. I tested the aero helmet on four occasions in the lead up to the Soma ½ IM this fall. On each ride I finished in 1:26-1:28 with the aero helmet at the same 200 watt normalized power.

I am convinced that the faster times had as much to do with the aero helmet as anything else. Furthermore I rode on 95 degree days and never thought that I was any hotter than my Atmos. I find it interesting that with so many aero helmets being ridden by pros I have never heard anyone saying that they blew their race because their aero helmet made them melt down. I think the heat issue is a fear/myth more than reality.  Finally, I used the helmet in the Soma ½ IM on a 97 degree day and recorded my fastest ½ IM bike split and never once thought of the heat on the bike.

So my unscientific testing and general perceptions have convinced me that aero helmets are worth the hype. The Giro Advantage 2 is a great way to get into the aero helmet market. Aero helmets are the best bang for the buck as far as speed increases go on the bike next to aero bars. Wind tunnel tests show them to be worth as much time savings as a disc wheel and deep dish front wheel. The price of an Advantage 2 is near $150.00,  which is considerably cheaper than any wheel set I know of! If you are considering an aero helmet check out the Giro Advantage 2. It looks cool, feels fast, and will improve your bike splits.
