Partnership Unveils Universal Design Home
A typical comfortable home can be more like a
perilous obstacle course for older adults and people
with disabilities. Stairs can become insurmountable;
doorways too narrow for wheelchairs; door and sink
handles inoperable; countertops too high.
What works for us in our homes now, will likely not be
manageable as we age. And we are aging: In the
Lehigh Valley, one fourth of our population is over
the age of 55. Some 38 percent of those aged 65
and over live with a disability significant enough to
require assistance.
