"Reflecting on History: How Activism and Diversity Changed Higher Education"
The Presidential Speaker Series on Diversity presents
activist and scholar, Dr. Angela Davis.
Angela Yvonne Davis (born January 26, 1944 in
Birmingham, Alabama) is an American radical activist
and philosopher who was associated with the Black
Panther Party in the 1960s and 1970s.
Dr. Angela Davis is currently Professor of History of
Consciousness and University of California
Presidential Chair at the University of California,
Santa Cruz, primarily working for racial and gender
equality and for prison abolition.
In 1970 she was placed on the FBI's Ten Most
Wanted List on false charges, and was the subject of
an intense police search that drove her underground
and culminated in one of the most famous trials in
recent U.S. history.
Dr.Davis will address a history of activism and
diversity in higher education, present day apathy and
conformity across college campuses and the need
make connections between activism historically and
how wecan exercise it today through education.

Partnership Unveils Universal Design Home
A typical comfortable home can be more like a
perilous obstacle course for older adults and people
with disabilities. Stairs can become insurmountable;
doorways too narrow for wheelchairs; door and sink
handles inoperable; countertops too high.
What works for us in our homes now, will likely not be
manageable as we age. And we are aging: In the
Lehigh Valley, one fourth of our population is over
the age of 55. Some 38 percent of those aged 65
and over live with a disability significant enough to
require assistance.

A Symposium on Current Issues
The preparation for college admissions and successful
completion begins in pre-collegiate education
experiences and continues throughout the education
pipeline. Dr. Michael
Nettles presentation will focus upon
the status of educational preparation and
achievement in the United States from pre-college
through various stages of higher education. He will
also focus on gaps in achievement that have
monumental consequences for America’s colleges and
universities. More than ever before, colleges and
universities have a need to be more attentive to
social class and other demographic divisions in the
United States population.
Michael T. Nettles is Senior Vice President for Policy
Evaluation and Research, and holds the Edmund W.
Gordon Chair for Policy Evaluation and Research at
Educational Testing Service in Princeton, NJ.
The Minority Affairs Coalition of The Lehigh Valley
Association of Independent Colleges
Hearty appetizers and refreshments will be
served throughout the symposium.
Please RSVP to: The Office of Institutional Diversity
at Moravian College Fax- 610.625.7805
Email- geg@moravian.edu by November 3rd, 2006 so
that we can plan for seating, materials, and
