Tips on Donating to Reliable Charities AARP Guide to Avoiding Katrina Scams Sadly, there are scam-artists trying to take advantage of the tragedy. Look for reliable, safe ways to give. As the Gulf Coast recovers from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, Americans are being very generous in donating money. But scam artists are using this disaster to try to take advantage of Americans generosity. Before you make a donation, be certain that your money is going where you want it to go. Just because someone claims the money will be used on behalf of a charity does not mean your money will really go to that cause or charity. If you don't know who is asking, don't give.Take the time to get more information.

The Hurricane Katrina disaster has displaced families across the Gulf Coast region. In cooperation with Reach Media Inc., The Tom Joyner Morning Show and BlackAmericaWeb.com, the BlackAmericaWeb.com Relief Fund will accept donations to provide resources to support families who are assisting those displaced by Hurricane Katrina. These funds will go to individual families who have opened their homes to families displaced by Hurricane Katrina, to supplement their personal households as the recovery efforts continue.

When you make your donation, you can be confident that your contribution will go to families that are in need of assistance. You can make an online donation by going to www.blackamericaweb.com/relief, by mail at:BlackAmericaWeb.com Relief FundPO Box 803209Dallas, TX 75240The BlackAmericaWeb.com Relief Fund is working cooperatively with churches in states neighboring affected areas to identify households in need of assistance. What do Donovan McNabb, Michael Jordan and Colin Powell have in common? They’ve all been mentors. Men, you are needed to help boys in at risk situations! Several boys who are proud of their African American heritage have applied for a mentor, someone they can “look up to”, a trusted friend. Please consider taking a couple hours a week at your convenience to make a difference in a young man’s life.

Two personal mentoring programs, Aspires (in partnership with the Lehigh County Conference of Churches) for Allentown youth, and Roads to Success, for Easton youth, serve boys and girls enrolled in Communities In Schools stay-in-school programs for grades 6-12. Women mentors are always needed, too, but boys wait far longer to be matched.
