Network Friends:
I’d like to welcome Communities In Schools
of the Lehigh Valley and the Coalition for
Appropriate Transportation as our newest
members to the Network. Read about these two
wonderful organizations below and the impact they
have on the Lehigh Valley!
Well summer is here and so are the Happenings!
If your headed to Musikfest this week, why not ride
your bike (parking your car can be difficult) CAT (the
Coalition for Appropriate Transportation) has got the
best deal at Musikfest! Free bike monitoring! Read
about it below.
And, speaking of Musikfest, one of my personal
favorites, George
Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic
will appear at the music festivals Straub Chrysler
Jeep River Place stage on Sat Aug. 13. Tickets are
still available.
Also this month, the State Theatre
of Easton and the Theatre Outlet
in Allentown are hosting 2 wonderful
presentations this month, Menopause The Musical
and Song on Sky Mountain.
And finally, my hero, Publisher John H.
Johnson, whose Ebony and Jet magazines
countered stereotypical coverage of blacks after
World War II and turned him into one of the most
influential black leaders in America, died Monday, his
company said. He was 87.
Remember, tell a neighbor, tell a friend and be
sure to let them know, you saw it in LV BNN!!

Tsidii Le Loka, South African actress, singer &
composer and Tony-nominated star of the original
Broadway production of The Lion King,
brings her original work to Theatre Outlet in this
exclusive return engagement!
If you missed the world premiere of Song on Sky
Mountain on July 15th, now is your chance to see
the show The Morning Call calls "enchanting." Join
Ms. Le Loka as she returns from Colorado with
this "odyssey of the spirit in song and poetry that
brings light to an incredible history and journey."
From the mountains of her--and Ms. Makeba's--tribal
homeland in South Africa to the towers of her
adopted home in New York City, and far,
far beyond, Ms. Le Loka follows in the footsteps of
the legendary Lady Africa to celebrate the story of
her own life through the timeless songs
and stories of two continents.
Colorado audiences are paying $60 per person to
attend this Broadway-caliber performance, but
because of Ms. Le Loka's ongoing partnership with
Theatre Outlet, she is graciously allowing us to offer
deeply discounted tickets for just $20 ($15 for
children 12 & under).
Families are strongly encouraged to attend the 1 pm
show on Saturday, August 27th, which just might
include Ms. Le Loka's very powerful--and
very rare--rendition of the beloved Lion King
classic, "Circle of Life."
This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience
the magic and extraordinary talent of a world-class
performer right here in the Lehigh Valley, all from a
distance of just a few feet!

Making A Difference With The Next Generation |
|
What do Donovan McNabb, Michael Jordan and Colin
Powell have in common? They’ve all been mentors.
Men, you are needed to help boys in at risk
situations! Several boys who are proud of their
African American heritage have applied for a mentor,
someone they can “look up to”, a trusted friend.
Please consider taking a couple hours a week at your
convenience to make a difference in a young man’s
life.
Two personal mentoring programs, Aspires (in
partnership with the Lehigh County Conference of
Churches) for Allentown youth, and Roads to
Success, for Easton youth, serve boys and girls
enrolled in Communities In Schools stay-in-school
programs for grades 6-12. Women mentors are
always needed, too, but boys wait far longer to be
matched.

student in search of guidance and friendship

African American History and Culture:
Electronic Press
Publisher John H.
Johnson, whose Ebony and Jet
magazines countered stereotypical coverage of
blacks after World War II and turned him into one of
the most influential black leaders in America, died
Monday, his company said. He was 87.
Private prison providers boomed in the 1990s, not least of all the Corrections
Corporation of America (CCA). As state
governments eagerly transferred prisoners to the
private sector, the country's largest for-profit prison
company became known as "a theme stock for the
nineties." That was before the stabbings, killings and
escape of five convicted murderers from an
overcrowded CCA facility in Youngstown, Ohio, in
1999. Inmates sued and won a $1.65 million
settlement. The for-profit experiment seemed in peril.
Luckily for CCA and other private prisons, the Bush
Administration came running to the rescue.
