President Ron's Weekly Message
Dear Friends, There is a time for fun and a time for caring. Your fund raising committee has been continuing to prepare for the Rotary Rawhide Roundup party in November. We have to be relentless in getting all the pieces together to make this a rip roaring fun time for everyone, and a great financial success for our club. Please be preparing your guest list of those family members AS WELL AS FRIENDS that you intend to bring.
Now for the caring. Dave Weilmuenster's wife Barbara passed away today, Tuesday September 25. Dave had some family with him as she passed. Please draw around the Weilmuenster family with your prayers and your caring. It was such a shock and so fast. I know you will love them through this as you have done with our other members in their time of need and grief.
These are times we need each other, and is evidence of why your attendance at each meeting is so very important and special. So, please, do your best to attend each meeting as often as possible. We need each other, and our community needs us. God Bless you.

Todays Featured Sp eaker: Jim Hathcock
Eat for Taste Eat for Health
Jim Hathcock started The Gallery On Glassell in Old Towne Orange, 14 years ago. The gallery specialized in original art and accessories for the first ten years. During that time, Jim and his wife, Donna, cooked all of the appetizers for their art events. Inevitably, people would ask: where can I get the recipes and ingredients for these dishes.
In response to their clients, nearly four years ago, Jim and Donna decided to start selling what they feel are the crucial elements to create great California and Mediterranean Cuisine. The first thing they say you have to remember is that good food comes from good ingredients. And, no matter where you live, no matter where you travel, the best food comes from local, organically grown produce and meat. Whenever possible, they buy produce from the various certified farmers' markets in Southern California. According to Jim, you have to pay a little more for them. But they are fresher, for the most part. And you end up having less produce go bad in the crisper.
Jim and Donna also paid attention to cookbooks of chefs they respect. The more they studied, the more they realized that chefs are artists: they just work in a different medium - the edible medium. Jim's presentation will show you how to unlock the great flavors in organic produce and meat by pairing them with products we should all use daily.

ANGELS BASEBALL & ROTARY PARTNER
TO END POLIO AND SERVE KIDS IN THE COMMUNITY
By John Burt, RI Foundation Chair for Orange Rotary On September 8, 2012 Rotary District 5320 held it's 4th Annual Angels Rotary Night Baseball Game that has earned a total of over $84,000 towards the Rotary Foundation's worldwide effort to end polio forever. Placentia Rotarian Kevin Padilla, our District Governor Nominee Designate, chaired this year's event. Festivities began as Rotarians & guests gathered at 3:30 pm for a tailgate party and chili cook-off competition won by Long Beach Rotary. The Orange Sunrise Club raised the most money, $500, during the chili competition. The fellowship among Rotarians and guests in District 5320 & adjacent Districts and the money raised have made this Rotary-MLB partnership the most successful in the United States. Past District Governor Greg Owen arranged for his huge trailer to be at the festivities again this year to help promote the END POLIO NOW campaign and also provided logo t-shirts that were sold for a dollar apiece. A highlight of the tailgate party included appearances of Miss Orange Megan Wisler, Miss Orange County Stephanie Patterson, Miss South Coast Katie Wayland, their Executive Director Connie Benson, Miss Yorba Linda Katy Tang, Miss Placentia Ryan Osborn, and their Executive Director Placentia Rotarian Kathi Baldwin. Also Dr. Sheila Steinberg, advisor to Orange Rotary's Chapman Rotaract Club brought members to the event. Thirty-five members of the Orange Rotary Club, many who were unable to attend the game, donated over $3,500 to send 40 kids and supervisors from Orangewood Children's Home for Abused & Neglected Kids and Big Brothers & Sisters of Orange County, each with a Club level ticket, an Angels baseball cap, $10 for food, and a $20 Raffle Ticket to attend batting practice. Three additional kids and a supervisor received tickets from 2 Orange Rotarians unable to attend at the last minute. Several of these kids had never attended a baseball game, including 2 of the 8 who were fortunate to attend batting practice. It was a wonderful sight to see the kids in the stands rooting the Angels to a 6-1 victory over the Detroit Tigers. Wow! What a fitting finale to a fun filled day. The Angels rocked AL MVP and Cy Young Award winner Justin Verlander, beginning with rookie Mike Trout's leadoff homer in the first inning and ending as Trout robbed Prince Fielder of a home run for the final out in the ninth. Whether or not you're a baseball fan, next year plan to give some kids this opportunity while you enjoy a game, raise funds to end polio, meet other Rotarians, and savor the best chili that District 5320 has to offer. This is what we're all about. |
The Fun begins on Saturday, November 10th 6 to 11pm at t
he Tustin Banquet Center,
721 E. 1st St, Tustin.
