Let's stay connected and informed!

 President Ron's Weekly Message

Your kind words and assurances that you support our plans to continue raising efforts towards excellence for our wonderful  Rotary Club here in Orange are appreciated.

We have so much started  already to help stabilize our club finances.  Solutions are being proposed to solve the financial shortfall in our lunch costs. When presented, I am sure you will be pleased.

Dinner at Mike and Annie Schmitt was an enormous success due to their generosity.   Beer and Carmel corn sales at the street fair should be  very successful.  Our Texas Hold'em tournament is on course and should be even bigger and better than last year.   So far, our fall fundraiser planning is shaping up nicely and we expect  announcements soon.

Expect much from us, cause we expect much from YOU!!!!

Pres. Ron

Glider Pilot Captain Bob Meyer

The invasion of France on June 6, 1944 was a triumph of intelligence, coordination, secrecy, and planning. The bold attack was also a tremendous risk. Ultimately it succeeded because of individual soldiers' bravery in combat.

An invading army had not crossed the unpredictable, dangerous Bob Meyer Glider Pilot English Channel since 1688 -- and once the massive force set out, there was no turning   back. The 5000-vessel armada stretched as far as the eye could see, transporting over 150,000 men and nearly 30,000 vehicles across the channel to the French beaches. Six parachute regiments -- over 13,000 men -- were flown from nine British airfields in over 800 planes.  More than 300 planes dropped 13,000 bombs over coastal Normandy immediately in advance of the invasion.

By nightfall on June 6, more than 9,000 Allied soldiers were dead or wounded, but more than 100,000 had made it to shore, securing French and coastal villages.

Above page (1 of 6)  "17 Seconds over Normandy - Robert H. Meyer - Combat Glider Pilot " The article is published this month in the French magazine "Vol à Voile" by Jean-Luc Beghin  . A timely and well deserved homage to a great Veteran.  Bob, the "G" on your "wings" is for Guts and you have them!

Angels Rotary Night to End Polio

We are about a week away from placing a block order for Orange Rotary Club's participation in the Angels Rotary Chili-cook-off/baseball game on Saturday September 8th. If you have made a commitment it should be recorded on the attached spreadsheet. Please verify that it is correct. If you have not committed to attend or to sponsor a kid, but would like to, please let John Burt know by e-mail at jburt1@socal.rr.com or at the meeting on Thursday.

Thus far your generous support totaling almost $2,500 will enable us to send 33 kids/supervisors from Orangewood Children's Home and Big Brothers/Big Sisters of OC to the game with a ticket, an Angels cap, and a raffle ticket to possibly attend batting practice.

Please bring a check payable to " Orange Rotary Club- ANGELS" for your commitment to the meeting on Thursday and give it to John Burt.

Thanks for your support of RI's quest to end polio worldwide and the kids at Orangewood and Big Brothers & Sisters of Orange County.
