Meet Michael Thompson

Assistant Administrator/Case Manager

I have been working with our residents and staff in the dual roles of Assistant Administrator and Case Manager at the Fay J. Lindner Residences for the past six years. As Assistant Administrator, I help to run the daily operations of the facility. In addition, I work to ensure that we are in compliance with New York State Department of Health rules and regulations, as well as our own high operating standards, in order to provide quality of care for all of our residents.   Our building is a beautiful place in which to live, and our diligence is well known.

In my role as Case Manager, I meet regularly with our residents to make sure that their care needs are met on a daily basis and over time, as these needs change.   There are many issues that may arise for a resident, such as illness, for example, and I help to provide assistance and guidance.   One of my areas of expertise is in dementia care, which is a serious and complex mental health issue facing some in our senior population and their families. I work to provide support to seniors diagnosed with dementia as well as to give advice to families about effective caregiver support. Additionally, I try to resolve any problem that may arise and offer appropriate solutions or resources, as needed, in a timely manner.

I graduated with Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees from Hofstra University, as well as a Master of Science from Long Island University, and began my career in healthcare in 1994. Over the last 17 years, I have worked in several facilities including hospitals, nursing homes and assisted living residences. I find my work with seniors and their families to be both rewarding and fulfilling.

 Know Your Veterans Benefits

Aid and Attendance is a special monthly pension benefit available to certain veterans and their surviving spouses.  Veterans who served 90 days or more of active duty with at least one day during wartime and were honorably discharged may be eligible for a substantial monthly benefit.  To find  out more about this benefit and to see if you qualify, join us on April 26, 2012 from 7:00- 8:30 p.m. as Gary Richard, Veteran's Service Officer for Suffolk County's Veterans Service Agency, explains the Aid and Attendance Benefit.

In March 2010, Gary retired after 30 years of active service in the

U. S. Army and now works as an advocate for Veterans and their families.  He is a four-time combat veteran, and was in combat in Grenada, Desert Storm, Iraq, and Afghanistan. He was given a Bronze Star Medal for Valor, two Purple Hearts, Parachutist Badge, Combat Action Badge, Air Assault Badge, Recruiter Badge, Expert Infantry Badge, and other decorations. He was in the Infantry and field artillery.

Cy Sussman Introducing Samuel "Cy" Sussman

Long before China brought Table Tennis to international prominence and ultimately the Olympics, a soft-spoken kid with a lightening fast backhand from the Upper East Side wowed the 92nd StreetY as "The Boy Wonder."  One year after learning the game, Cy won the Boy's National Singles Title in Table Tennis before becoming the youngest National Men's Doubles Champion four years later.  Cy and his doubles partner, Eddie Pinner, repeated as champions the next year, before joining the army in 1942.  It was during his tour in Hawaii that Cy achieved prominence by accepting an open challenge from and defeating none-other than Bobby Riggs (then a professional tennis player who had won a singles crown at Wimbledon and was a two-time US National Champion).  Upon returning from service in 1946, Sussman and Pinner won their third doubles title.  Before retiring from the circuit, the two were asked to compete in the International Invitational in Sweden in 1949, where they were undefeated.  The sport has continued to grow in popularity and recognition.  The "Boy Wonder" received his own recognition with his induction into the U.S. Table Tennis Association Hall of Fame in 1985.
