Federal Reserve Bank Conference Focuses
on Small Business and Entrepreneurship

On November 9-10, 2011 the Role of Small Business and Entrepreneurship during an Economic Recovery conference was held in Washington, DC.  Stephan Goetz was invited to serve on the Panel -Strengthening Entrepreneurship Opportunities in Urban and Rural Communities.  Click here to view the presentation.

 

Federal Reserve Bank Chairman Ben S. Bernanke of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System provided opening remarks and Carl J. Schramm, President and CEO of the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation delivered a keynote address. In his opening remarks, Dr. Bernanke referred to rural cooperative extension offices as being one organization that offers "valuable technical assistance and training programs" to small businesses and entrepreneursView a transcript of his remarks at the conference.

SAVE THE DATE
2012 National Value Added Conference

The 2012 National Value Added Conference will be held June 24-26, 2012 in Traverse City, Michigan and will be co-sponsored by the Northeast Regional Center.  The conference theme will be rural development, community building, and entrepreneurship. 

 

More details and a call for papers will be released in January or February, 2012. 

 
Great Bay Project
Nitrogen Hot Spots

The Great Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (GBNERR) is working with the UNH and other partners to better understand how nitrogen pollution flows into New Hampshire's Great Bay. The goal of this project is to generate and share the best science available on non-point nitrogen sources in streams and rivers that drain to Great Bay, as well as how the science can support local and regional decision-making.  Contact Charlie French for more information on this project.

The Determinants of Rural Self-Employment: Insights from County-Level Data

The sustained surge in rural self-employment since 2000 has largely gone unnoticed by policy makers and rural economic developers. This article documents the increase and identifies the variables associated with expanding self-employment using county-level data. The full paper is available on the NERCRD's website.
