Waters Edge at Willow Brook breaks ground in Mankato, Minnesota

The "Land of 10,000 Lakes" will soon be the home of the first Green House Assisted Living homes!  Groundbreaking ceremonies took place on a gorgeous sunny morning June 27th, in Mankato, Minnesota.

Passion and tenacity are two words that can be used to describe Mt. San Antonio Gardens, in their pursuit to bring The Green House Project to California.  Spurred on by the belief that there has to be a better way to support to our elders, in a real home environment, where all people are treated with dignity, this organization has blazed a trail...

The Green House Annual Meeting and Celebration

The Green House Project is excited to host The Fifth Annual Green House Meeting and Celebration, an exclusive opportunity for organizations who have adopted The Green House Project.  This year's meeting will be held on September 5-7 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Building on an important value of The Green House concept, this year's theme, "Meaningful Life, Meaningful Engagement", will highlight the impact organizations are having on the lives of the people who are living and working in their Green House homes...

Reciprocity: A Bake Sale at Lebanon Valley Brethren Home

In What Are Old People For?, Dr. Thomas describes "Reciprocity" in this way, "Protection can, in fact, be given and received among equals. This approach is founded on the principle of reciprocity rather than on the helplessness of the frail in the face of adult vigor." (pg. 261)

Sarah Hoffman, illustrates this principle through her story of a bake sale at Lebanon Valley Brethren Home...

Celebrating the service of WWII Nurse, June Rolinson!

During the month of July, when we celebrate our nation's independence, it's also a time to honor those who have served in our military preserving our freedom over the years.  92 year old June Rolison, a WWII Army Nurse, is one of those individuals.  "I just wanted to take care of people", that's how June described her decision to become a nurse.  June currently resides in the "Redford House", a Green House home on the Presbyterian Villages of Michigan Redford Campus...

Highlighting The Green House Project Team: Kate Waldo, Project Guide

Kate always wanted to be a teacher.  As a child her "classes" would include her brother and all of her dolls.  She thoroughly enjoyed leading her "pupils" through their lessons.  So it's easy to understand that she has found teaching professionals in aging services about culture change a most rewarding career experience.

Like many of us, Kate's first memory of skilled nursing involved a family member.  Her great grandfather, a strong and proud farmer, had experienced a stroke and was physically restrained when she had come to visit...

THRIVE Research: Examining deep culture change adoption in the Green House model

There's an old saying, "you can't know where you're going until you know where you've been." The culture change movement is a shift in philosophy towards a more person-centered model of nursing home care. Green House specifically, and the nursing home culture change movement more generally, has grown tremendously over the past two decades. If policymakers are to further encourage adoption of this model, they need to better understand the factors that promote adoption of the model.

An Innovative Response to Global Aging

Click here to view an interview of Dr. Al Power, geriatrician, and Dr. Emi Kyota, environmental gerontologist,  as they discuss their new project called, An Innovative Approach to Global Aging: Creating a resilient community for all.  The suggestion within this project is that an essential part of resilience in communities is to create environments where the presence and perspective of older adults is seen as a normal and valued...
