Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum
On a recent trip I had occasion to visit the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Museum. It was well worth the time to visit.
The brickyard, as it is often called, was built in the spring of 1909. The original surface was crushed rock with a little tar to bind it together. That lasted only for a couple early events before it was replaced by the famous 10 pound street paving bricks. Today, only a small strip across the front straight remains of those original bricks.

The first Indianapolis 500 ran in 1911. The winner was Ray Harroun driving the Marmon Wasp. He averaged 74.602 mph - certainly not bad for 1911, on a brick surface, with tires maybe 2-3 inches across the tread.

In addition to a tour of the track, there is an excellent museum on the grounds. It contains many of the winners and most famous Indy cars of all eras. My favorites were the Indy roadsters of the 1950's.

Add this museum to your automotive bucket list. You won't be disappointed.

AAA Glidden, Brenham, TX, Oct. 21-26
What's happening backstage prior to the 2012 Glidden Tour ------"The Great Texas Trail Drive" - by Jamie Crandall

I know you have all seen a rollback truck picking up dead cars on various tours! None of us hate to admit it, but most all of us have had troubles one time or another with our old cars. Did you know that AAA provides the sweep truck for the Glidden each year? As one of our important sponsors, AAA steps up to the plate with trucks and drivers for each Glidden. Not only do they pick up dead cars, they also are always quick to lend a helping hand for minor breakdowns and finding or providing service as needed for each of our members. In addition to road service, among other things, they provide the beautiful Glidden Trophies, signage and car banners. This year, we have been working with them on articles that will appear in "Texas Journey", AAA's magazine that is distributed to all AAA members in the Texas region describing the Glidden Tour with a follow up article about "The Great Texas Trail Drive" after it's completion.

Have I heard how much you all like to eat?? Some of our trail hands have been selecting recipes, trying different restaurants, looking for ice cream stops, reviewing menus and just plain gaining weight! You remember our philosophy for a successful tour ------- feed em every 2 hours and they will forget about any mistakes! We won't let you down.
The tour routes are complete and have been checked ---- we left a couple of mistakes to see just how sharp you are! Lloyd and Mary Ann Hill who will be in charge of signs and parking have checked all intersections for signage and have reviewed all the directions. Lloyd will be assembling a crew to help with each stop in addition to working with the wranglerettes.
Debbie Meregle, Bettye Ames and Pat have started outlining the tour book. The route instructions are complete, maps are being discussed, historical facts are being assembled and the list of tourists is growing rapidly. Debbie will be doing the final layout and assembly and has a big job between now and October.

The Bexar Touring Club has offered to take care of and supply the hospitality building which will be located at the fairgrounds. Knowing the Bexar Touring Club as I do, I can assure you, this will be a first class operation. Many of you know June Prade from years back and she will be one of the kingpins in the operation!
One last item that's worth mentioning. Joe Brown from Andrews, TX has gathered up a bunch of cowpokes from west Texas and they are working on a surprise with lots of nonsense that will be introduced early one morning right after breakfast! Don't miss it.
So, there you have it. A bit of backstage drama that never shows once the tour starts. We are looking forward to meeting you October 21st. It's a great time of year to be in south Texas and I know you will have fun. Remember to bring your boots and jeans and we'll provide the hat!

The VMCCA Page on Facebook!
Facebook has become an extremely popular social networking site, reportedly having more than 500,000,000 users. That is something like one in fifteen people on the planet! There is no doubt that it is a great tool for keeping in touch with people and organizations in a way that was undreamed of and impossible just a few short years ago.

I set up a page for us a few months ago and it is becoming more and more popular. It really is becoming a forum with many active contributors.
So join! Contribute! Make it a forum for all things VMCCA. Click on the "Find us on Facebook" box below. Then click Like!

Photo Site - See Link in Quick Links
The Photo Site is one I created originally for my local chapter, although many VMCCA members from other areas now visit it. It covers all the local, regional, and national events that I attend. Obviously, I cannot attend everything but I would like this to become a site for photos from all our regions and chapters.
So, who has photos from any of this years tours? I would love to share them with everyone. Send them to me!
