Latest News on Girls and STEM/STEAM
The mission of Cool Girls Science and Art Club is to engage young girls in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) so they have the desire, confidence and skills to sustain their contributions to the community throughout their personal, academic and professional journeys.

Cool Girls Science and Art Club is a proud member of the National Girls Collaborative Project.

The club was founded in 2008 by a group of 8-year-olds who love learning about science, technology, engineering, the arts, and math (STEAM).

Each semester the girls in the program decide what they want to learn with the help of mentors.

Cool Girls became a nonprofit in 2010. No child is turned away for financial reasons.

We need your help to keep the program going and to reach other girls.

Cool Girls Get Media Attention

Did you catch the Dec. 11 issue of the Daily Camera, Boulder's primary newspaper? Well, if you can't recall, then you may not have noticed the fabulous story about Cool Girls Science and Art Club. Take a few minutes to read it now, and share with anyone you think might be interested.

What's Coming Up in January
  • Cool Girls Science and Art Club revs up again at Crest View, with sessions beginning Tuesday, Jan. 17 for grades 1-3, in Erin Maxwell's kindergarten classroom from 2:30-4 pm  and Thursday, Jan. 19 for grades 4-5, in Renee Cerny's classroom from 2:30-4:30.   The focus for this semester is on "Building a Better World".  The girls will have an opportunity to experiment with materials and mentors in various areas of STEAM to construct models of their ideal societies.

Cool Girls (and boys) design and play computer games with AgentSheets software.

  • Registration details and dates are available by clicking here.  We always have a waiting list and will get back to you this week to confirm your registration.  Flyers have been sent out in English and Spanish.  Partial scholarships and payment plans are provided so that no girl is turned away for financial reasons.  To ensure that your daughter is in our database, please use our new and improved online registration form.
December Club Highlights
  • On their last meetings of the first semester, happy Cool Girls had pizza and came home with wooden models to build over break. One Cool GIrl had the Eiffel Tower constructed within a day. Now that's an impressive feat!
  • As for those bugs, yes, termites did come to class with the Cool Girls. A special thanks to BVSD's Science Director (and entomologist) Samantha Messier. We'll happily learn from you and your bugs any time.

Communications Help Wanted

Communications Director Julie Poppen could use some help spreading the word about Cool Girls. Specifically, she needs help in the following areas:
  • Photo editor: We need a volunteer who is adept at organizing photos online who can clean up and organize the awesome photos we're collecting on Flickr and Facebook.

Scientist Augusta Garrison helps Cool Girls learn about adhesives.

  • Events calendar pro: We need another dedicated volunteer who can spend a few minutes each week updating the events calendar on the website. Once you learn how to do it, it's a breeze.

NGCP Colorado Date Set

As you may know, Cool Girls Science and Art Club is the official  convening organization of the new Colorado Collaborative of the National Girls Collaborative Project, the aim of which is to bring more women and girls into science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) by providing professional development and mini-grants to groups that share this goal.  This effort is supported by funding from the National Science Foundation.

The first Information Meeting will be held Tuesday, March 6, 12:30-2:30 pm, at Skyline High School, 600 E. Mountain View Avenue, Longmont. If you are involved in anything related to this worthy cause, please consider participating and encourage other programs, nonprofits, businesses, etc. to join us. The NGCP national leadership will participate and we hope to get representatives from about 50 organizations around the state to join us. Contact Cool Girls Director Mary Golden for more information by e-mailing her at [email protected].

Lots of interesting synergy is already coming out of this new role as we collaborate with more than a dozen members of the Colorado Leadership Team who represent Skyline, CU Science Discovery, Colorado Girl Scouts, the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, the National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT) and others.
