Green Design

Green or 'Sustainable' design is design that goes beyond being just efficient, attractive, on time, and on budget. It is a design that cares about how such goals are achieved and about its effect on people and on the environment. An environmentally responsible professional makes a commitment to constantly try to find ways to diminish design's impact on the world around us. It is also a smart way of doing business: sustainable design is the fastest growing segment of the design industry. {source: ASID

Many of The Red Vault members incorporate green design practices in their work and inventory.

Bob Card of Greenwood Bay uses reclaimed lumber in all of his work. He masterfully crafts each piece by hand using old techniques - his pieces are all unique and definitely one-of-a-kind!

The cabinets in the photo above and below were all finished using tung oil and wax - no polyurethane! All paint is low VOC paint.

This table is made from landfill-diverted wood that grew in Houston. It was a 110 year old Ash tree taken out for road construction.

The Elm for this table came from a farm in Massachusetts and is 70 years old. The finish on the table is simple oil and wax.

Brown

Brown carries two 'green' products for caring for your home.

First is "The Original Bee's Wax" furniture polish. It makes granite acid resistant, keeps your bathroom mirror from fogging up and doesn't leave fingerprints or wax build up on your furniture. It can be used on copper, wrought iron, marble, leather, chrome, stainless steel... just about everything.  It cleans, protects, preserves and restores lustre while keeping the wood from drying out.

Next is our "Fire Ball."  It's essentially a wick-less candle that burns with a pourable Eco-Gel fuel.  The gel is a citronella base which is great for repelling mosquitoes.  It's a clean burning bio-ethanol fuel made from recycled post consumer waste.

Carol Isaak Barden is an ultimate green builder.  She searches for lots with old trees so buyers will have tree-top views and a green space.  One of her primary objectives is the complete integration of the house and the gardens.  Her

homes are contemporary, and spaces consist of simple forms, clean lines, discreet colors, and imaginative but functional lighting.  Beautiful materials are handled with care, and everything is serene and calming.  Architects have outfitted the living area with elegantly crafted cabinetry, have integrated unexpected materials and the work of artists and craftsmen, and have updated the traditional floor plan.  Kitchens - outfitted with large pantries, plentiful storage, and a television - are mission control, the heart of the home.
