Greetings!

Summer is in full swing and, inspired by the temperature outside, we are showcasing 'hot' kitchen design trends.

TRV dealers answer: "How do you create a functional kitchen with a fresh atmosphere and unique design elements?"

Alice Wilson of Alice Wilson/Tom Stovall Interiors:  Many people seem to be moving away from granite.  Marble, soapstone, and wood have become popular.  Alice says, "Remember that boats are made from wood - wood makes good counter tops"!  She has also seen some Italian pre-fab metal cabinets which would be perfect in a contemporary kitchen.

Amilee Wendt/Wendt Design Group:   Kitchens have become such a focal point of a house. Since everyone congregates there, make it an entertainment room!   She recently updated a 40 year old house by taking out a study wall to open the kitchen and breakfast room to the den.  Make counter tops part of the kitchen or as a buffet for serving.

New Baseboards & crown molding make a dramatic difference.  Sheetrock without texture is also a good look.  Re-use what you have.  Replace the cabinet doors and update the hardware instead of all the cabinets.  You can also faux finish the cabinets or paint them.   Check out tax credits for recycling products and for using products that are manufactured within 500 miles or less.

Neutral warm wood palette enhanced with a bold accent color and a cool contemporary vent hood and glass countertop

Tracey Shingdledecker & Kelly O'Donnell, the 2 Lucy's, import unique pieces from Europe. By using these pieces in a different ways, they breathe new life into their surroundings.

The 2 Lucy's have a wood cabinet with a blue center stone that would make a great kitchen island or dining room server.

Wouldn't this be a striking kitchen centerpiece?

A simple butcher block table.  Perfect for a smaller kitchen or in lieu of lower cabinets.

Kelly and Tracy also have a long wood table with a trestle base coming in their August shipment.

Whether the home is a new-construction or renovation project, islands are used in the kitchen area as a separate piece. Islands work well as separates in kitchens because of the variety of styles and sizes and they provide a great solution for breaking up the monotonous look and feel of matching counter tops, tiles, cabinetry, etc. This can give the kitchen a boost in both interest and functionality. At Design House, we offer extremes in both styles and sizes.

This informal piece in cherry veneer evokes the earthy quality of a wine tasting in the cellar of a renowned winery. Featuring wine storage below, the 63" top and 34"h makes this piece perfect for food service or even for food prep in the kitchen.

Custom built-ins can make all the difference in the feel of a kitchen; however, taking an antique bookcase or cabinet and incorporating it into your space can take a kitchen from typical to extraordinary.

Trends: Light Grays, Honed Granite, Chrome fixtures, Reclaimed materials, Wallpaper, Countertop metals (zinc, galvanized steel), white marble, and subway tiles

Galvanized steel top tables are a perfect blend of using reclaimed materials to create a sophisticated look

French metal dough bin could be an easy conversation piece as an island/work table/bar

The English shop keeper's counter is open in the back and would be fabulous for looks and storage.

Oxford Contractors state that a kitchen renovation does not mean gutting the room.  To save money and get a fresh new look, don't change existing locations of plumbing, stove and gas. Along with taking a "save and splurge" approach {which is to pick one focal point and spend money in that area}, here are some great combination updates that can give the owner a new kitchen:

·         Add crown molding
·         Change hinges and change cabinet faces or resurface
·         Paint the room and cabinets
·         New counter tops
·         Under counter lighting & general lighting layout
·         New appliances

Custom Cabinets can make a great difference as they provide return on investment and offer great features as they usually provide the owner with more function and they gain space in the depth of drawers and storage.  Cabinets are custom designed to the home owner's lifestyle, layout, and need.

Oxford can assist with all your kitchen design and building needs and more. Call for advice or an in-home consultation.

Next week we will be continuing the kitchen design idea and discuss lighting trends.

Have a wonderful weekend!
