Thank you!  Your decision to volunteer for MRC is appreciated!  Please spread the word about our Northern NH Unit to your friends, family and Co-Workers.  We would welcome the opportunity to come and speak about MRC at your workplace or other meetings or functions.

Please remember to keep us updated if your email address changes!  Email is our most immediate and efficient way of communicating with our volunteers.
Greetings!
There have been some changes in the Northern New Hampshire Unit of the Medical Reserve Corps.  First of all, Becky Bowers is the new volunteer coordinator for the NNHU of the MRC.  Becky joined the North Country Health Consortium in early January and has a background in volunteer management and community organizing.

Also, one of the goals of the NNHU is to gather individuals to serve on an advisory board.  If you have experience in Emergency Management and/or Volunteer Management  and are willing to attend 2 meetings per year either in person or by phone, please contact Becky at (603) 837-2519 or email rbowers@nchcnh.org.

Don't get the Flu
Children and the Flu
Just in time for the flue season, the CDC has recently released a toolkit to teach children about flu prevention.  The lesson plans cover hand washing, covering your cough and sneeze and how germs spread.  The lessons also include songs, puzzles and other activities.  A pdf of the tool is available here.

Remember to share general information about the flu with children:
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze so you don't pass germs to others.
  • Wash your hands the right way to get rid of germs and lower the chance of spreading germs.
  • Don't touch your eyes, nose or mouth until your hands are clean because germs spread that way.  Keeping your hands clean is one of the best ways to keep from getting sick and spreading illness.
  • Tell children to let an adult know if they feel sick.

Ongoing Training Requirements
  • "Introduction to Disaster Services Training": Is an American Red Cross course that takes less than an hour to complete.  You will virtually participate in a fire disaster response, and walk through the role of a volunteer responder.  Access this training online.
  • "Incident Command System (ICS) 100 and 200": Is a very informative training course offered by FEMA.  This course explains the communication procedures used to best support on-scene responders and coordinated various agencies during all-hazard incidents.  This is required before attending any Federal Deployment Training.  You can access it online.  Please remember to send confirmation of your successful completion of ICS 100 and 200 to Becky at rbowers@nchcnh.org.
  • "ICS-700, National Incident Management System (NIMS), An Introduction": Will help you understand the way in which disasters are managed and how volunteers fit into the plan/response.  This FEMA course is divided into individual lessons, which each take 15-30 minutes to complete.  This is also required before attending any Federal Deployment Training.  Access it online.  Again, please send confirmation of your successful completion to Becky at rbowers@nchcnh.org.
  • "Public Health 101": Is another valuable course that introduces members to the core concepts of public health.  Access this training online.  Then scroll down to "Online."
  • "Family Preparedness":  All MRC volunteers must complete a family and personal preparedness plan.  Come to our Family Preparedness training to learn how.
  • "Psychological First Aid": All volunteers must be able to provide psychological first aid to disaster survivors, MRC team members and others.  Be on the look out for this training in March.

ESAR-VHP2ESAR-VHP

If you are a MRC volunteer, don't forget to register with ESAR-VHP (NH Emergency System for Advance Registration of Healthcare Professionals).  This is not longer restricted to just health-care professionals.  All MRC Volunteers can register.  It is an electronic database of health-care personnel and others who have indicated their interest in volunteering to provide aid in an emergency.  ESAR-VHP works on a volunteer basis, so you decide when and where you wish to volunteer.  This system:
  1. Registers health volunteers (as well as others)
  2. Applies emergency credentialing standards to registered health volunteers, and
  3. Allows for the verification of the identity, credentials and qualifications of registered health volunteers in an emergency.
MRC Unit Coordinators can verify credentials through the ESAR-VHP.  All MRC Health-care volunteers are encouraged to register.  Click here for more information.
