Greetings!

You've heard it many times; Children learn through play. But what does that really mean? It doesn't look like learning, so sometimes parents worry because we are not "teaching" the children the skills they need to be ready for school.

Parents want what's best for their kids. They want us to teach their children their ABCs, numbers and colors and how to read. I would argue though, that our role is actually not to teach children, but to facilitate and support the learning that comes naturally when we provide them with safe and loving, developmentally appropriate environments where they were free to play, explore and experiment.

We instinctively know this, but because many policy makers have not studied or worked with children, they push "school readiness" in strictly academic terms, insisting that we drill young children on their ABCs and teach them to sit still in a desk all day. We often begin to doubt what we know to be true and have a hard time articulating to parents what their children are learning in our programs while they are building with blocks, measuring sand and water, or playing dress-up.

I want to give providers (and parents!) a place where they can share developmentally appropriate ideas and activities and, talk about how these activities promote learning. I believe that talking about it will provide the practice it takes to be comfortable articulating to parents that indeed, their child is learning. And, we can all learn from each other!

I invite you to share your favorite activities with everyone, and pick up some ideas from other Providers!

Think Your Rates Should be the Same as

Other Providers in Your Neighborhood?

Maybe. But probably not.

One of the most important, and perhaps the most difficult, processes a provider will need to complete is establishing her rates. Most providers anguish over the question, "How much should I charge" The answer to that question is individual and different for every provider. The answer is NOT what the provider down the street is charging. The answer is NOT what the subsidy agencies will pay. And the answer is definitely NOT a different arbitrary fee for each individual family. To come up with the answer to this question, a provider must ask his or herself the following questions and then use the information to come up with a rate that is right for that individual provider. Without child care, parents cannot go to work, school or training. Public policy not only dictates the availability of child care, but it also affects the quality and affordability of child care. It determines funding levels and legislation, regulation and oversight. Whether we realize it or not, politicians have a say in what the child care workforce earns, education and professional development requirements, and child care and early education standards.

If we do not educate ourselves on public policy and provide input and feedback, legislators make all the decisions and have total control over the early care and education system. Often, these decision makers don't have any children of their own, or, if they do have kids, they may not face the same challenges and obstacles that many families face on a daily basis.

I urge you all to get involved and connect with your Family Child Care Association!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Sincerely,
