Bringing Best Practices to your Surgical Facility
| |
By Ken Drazen
In 1954, Peter Drucker, famed Harvard Business School Professor, formulated the term "Management By Objectives" in his book, The Practice of Management. For more than 60 years, large organizations from all parts of the U.S. have used his "MBO" method to drive business performance, and the method has become a tool kit for the execution of business outcomes.
Can Peter Drucker's methods apply to the activities and management goals of an Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC)? As an investor in the Outpatient Surgery Center industry, we see some important trends moving management practices in Professor Drucker's direction:
- Adoption of newer operational technologies, such as AmkaiSolutions's suite of business and clinical solutions, which streamline the activities of the surgery center or hospital and its affiliated practices.
- Electronic Medical Records to enable the application of decision support tools that improve patient safety and begin the step toward outcome-driven healthcare reimbursement.
- Business intelligence tools to aggregate data across the enterprise and industry, as well as to automate the combinations of key performance data (scheduling, OR room efficiency, case costing, payer behavior, etc).
Ken Drazan, MD, Executive Chairman of Medibis, is a co-founder and Partner at Bertram Capital, a growth equity firm in Silicon Valley CA. Prior to Bertram, Ken was a life science entrepreneur and liver transplant surgeon at Stanford University.
Medibis, located in Oklahoma City, OK, is the leading provider of cloud-based decision support and business intelligence for the leading surgical facilities in the United States today. You can find Medibis in ITunes and at www.medibis.com

Safe Surgical Checklist Adherence | |
As of January 1, 2012, Ambulatory Surgery Centers were required to begin using a Safe Surgical Checklist. Both AmkaiCharts and AmkaiOffice have been instrumental in helping AmkaiSolutions clients adhere to these new standards.
The components of the Safe Surgical Checklist have long been part of AmkaiCharts, and facilities with AmkaiCharts are now able to run a report that confirms their adherence to the Safe Surgical Checklist.
Facilities that have not yet implemented AmkaiCharts can produce a checklist using AmkaiOffice with the patient's name, date of surgery and surgeon in either the WHO or AORN format. This will greatly assist surgery centers in compliance and help avoid future reimbursement penalties.
For more information on making sure your facility is compliant, please contact AmkaiSolutions Client Services. |
