 Poetry Out Loud Competition:

On February 4, 2012, VCS students Will Flatt and Hannah Samuelson will be competing in the regional Poetry Out Loud competition at the College of Idaho.

Poetry Out Loud is for high-school students (grades 9-12, or 8th graders enrolled in high school classes) at both public and private schools.

Poetry Out Loud starts in the classroom, with participating teachers using the Poetry Out Loud teacher toolkit to teach poetry recitation and run classroom competitions.

Poetry Out Loud uses a pyramid structure that begins at the classroom level.  Winners advance to a school-wide competition, then to a regional and/or state competition, and ultimately to the National Finals.

Poetry Out Loud seeks to foster the next generation of literary readers by capitalizing on the latest trends in poetry - recitation and performance. The program builds on the resurgence of poetry as an oral art form, as seen in the slam poetry movement and the immense popularity of rap music among youth. Poetry Out Loud invites the dynamic aspects of slam poetry, spoken word, and theater into the English class. Through Poetry Out Loud, students can master public speaking skills, build self-confidence and learn about their literary heritage.

Singing Valentines!

Vision Charter's Middle School Choir would like to help you honor your special friends and family members and teachers for Valentine's Day.  We are offering our services for singing Valentines.  For $2, you can send a heart-shaped card, small bag of candy, and a song to any student or adult at VCS on February 14.  The song will be sung during advisory for middle and high school students and during the last hour of the day for elementary students.  Valentines must be ordered and paid for with any special message you wish us to include on the card no later than February 8.  They must be returned to Mrs. Ellis in M-1; we will not be responsible for Valentines given to classroom or advisor teachers.  Happy Valentine's Day!  You may send them to multiple people.

IN THE NEWS:

Science is Alive and Well at Vision Charter

Vision Charter School boasts a classical education focusing on arts and sciences, and there has been no shortage of science accomplishments this year! From a space shuttle trip in 4th grade to robots and cutting-edge metropolitan developments in secondary, science is alive and well at Vision Charter School.

Mrs. Ayotte's 4th grade classroom morphed into a spaceship launching galaxy travelers- the fellow elementary students, parents, and staff- to all the planets in our solar system. The travelers survived asteroids, a comet's tail and the takeoff and landing on many planets. Planetary experts boarded at each stop to give their fellow travelers a wealth of information about each planet. All travelers were brought safely back to earth at the end of each space mission, and ruminations of intra-galactic travel and space trivia buzzed around school for the rest of the day.

Vision middle school students have had a taste of engineering and design in the Future City program directed by Mr. Leavell and Mr. George. Students from 6th to 8th grade work in teams to design cities of the future, and they deal with real issues facing cities in the process: smog, cost versus need, housing, industry, and economic considerations (to name a few). As a result of a school-wide determination, three teams were sent to the recent regional competition in Boise. Team "Togotopia" received recognition and an award for "Best New Team." Team "Bannister" came home with the title of "Most Livable City." Additional information about the competition and program can be found at futurecity.org.

Vision high school students are engaging in engineering of another sort through the robotics club. This is the second year that Vision Charter students have represented the school in the robotics competition. Thanks to a grant from Discovery Education, the club received over $800 worth of Tetrix robotics and two years worth of FTC membership ($275/year).  A different challenge is issued each September with a state competition at the University of Idaho in Moscow each February.  The challenge this year is "Bowled Over" where the robot can earn points by moving or stacking crates, and moving bowling or racketballs.  So far this year the club has successfully built a working robot and has constructed a practice field, similar to the fields at competition.  Two teams are chosen from Idaho to compete at the World Championships in St. Louis Missouri each May.  Vision Charter has a team of 14 this year. Each team member who participates for two years is eligible to apply for millions of dollars worth of scholarships.

The excitement and achievement in science does not only exist outside of the school day. The science classrooms abound with engaging activities as well. Life science students are making waves in the "We Can Change the World" challenge (more information can be found at wecanchange.com). The biology classes are taking advantage of Mr. George's efforts to connect with the University of Southern California Quikscience Challenge, paving the road as the pilot school on the mainland United States (more information can be found at usc.edu/org/quikscience). Anatomy and physiology students can often be found participating in dissections, case studies, or listening to a range of guest speakers from the medical field. In addition, the anatomy and physiology students join the students of chemistry in receiving college credits for their studies in these courses!
