Middle and High School Science Night/Elementary Math Night/ Book Fair for ALL:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Thursday, February 17, 2011
5-7 p.m. at Vision Charter School
General Science Classes:  All 3 General Science classes will set up their projects in I1 and I2.  Each group is presenting a Green/Ecological project that can be easily replicated to solve a problem in their local community.  Students are competing nationally for $10,000 saving bonds and a host of other prizes.  The science night is an opportunity for them to share their research with our Vision community so that they can receive feedback prior to entering their projects in the competition this March.
Biology:  Biology students will set up in H1 and be presenting projects on cells, DNA, Genetics, and the effects of music on the human brain.  All projects will have an interactive component so those who come to the science night can participate in and be part of the student's research.
Anatomy & Physiology: Students will set up in H1 room.  Some students will present research on diseases of the Integumentary, Muscular, Skeletal, and Nervous Systems.  Other students will be displaying models created to illustrate different anatomical structures in one of the systems listed above.   Other students will be presenting research related to brain function and structure.  Again, this group of projects will have an interactive component that allows those coming to the science night to participate in the student's research.
Physical Science:  ROBOTS:  VCS is excited to take a team of seven middle and high school students to the FIRST Tech Robot competition in Moscow, Idaho, February 12th.  We will be competing against schools all over Idaho in building and using robotics.  These are the same robotics used by freshman at MIT and other prestigious technical schools.  After two years of competition, these students will be eligible for millions of dollars of scholarships, cosponsored by FIRST and LEGO.
At the February 17, 2011 VCS science fair, this team will be on-hand to demonstrate their Tetrix robot on the competition field.  We will have two more teams with LEGO NXT robots and two teams with Nano Hexbug projects.  The Nano teams and an additional team will be representing the six simple machines.  Their challenge?  Create a robot/nano system that can traverse a narrow passage in an Aztec tomb and activate a pressure point to open a door.  Their work modeled a project team in the engineering industry and they will be presenting to their shareholders (the science fair attendees).
All middle and high school students will be required to be present to answer questions and share their research with visitors who come to participate in the Science night.  This is part of their 3rd quarter grade and an important aspect in the Scientific Method (Reporting Results).  For many of the students raising community awareness and conducting research is a component of their project so they need to be here on this night. No exceptions will be made.
Science Fair Goals:
-The primary goal for the science night is for students to present relevant projects related to the curriculum for their grade level.
-Communicate with the community about important issues or scientific research that they have been studying in class.
-Allow visitors to interact with the information and not just be passive observers.  Essentially we want our students to draw people into their scientific world, even if it is for only one night.
-Help our students realize that research/projects are not cookie cutter, one size fits all, always follows the scientific method in a specific order process.  Science is diverse, always changing, and presented to the general public in a variety of ways.
K-6th grade students are invited to come explore hands-on math games and activities located in the elementary classrooms. Students and parents are also invited to attend the VCS Scholastic Book Fair located in D2.
DEBATE / SNOW TEAM:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

VCS will be offering a FREE policy debate class for middle and high school students starting Tuesday, February 1, 2011! Class will meet from 3:15 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. in L2.

The focus of the class is to develop confidence while speaking in public, increase critical thinking skills, and learn the organizational and research skills necessary for successful debate.  This is the first year VCS has offered a full cross-examination style debate club, so don't worry if your perspective debater has no experience.  They won't be alone!

In addition to weekly class, two tournaments will be held.  Parents and other VCS students are encouraged to come watch their debaters in action during both tournaments.  In fact, the more spectators we have, the better the experience is for our students.  Debating in front of large groups adds an additional degree of difficulty that will help our debaters get the most out of their debates.   A short class for spectators will be held prior to the beginning of the first round of each tournament to help spectators make sense of what they are watching!

The first tournament will occur on the 22nd of February at VCS in lieu of regularly scheduled class.  This tournament will be round-robin style, and will not offer break rounds.  Break rounds are a play-off.  If a team wins enough rounds, or compiles enough speaker points, they "break" to quarter-finals and begin competing in a winner-moves-on bracket.

The second tournament will towards the end of March.  This tournament will have both preliminary rounds, and break rounds.  We will break to either quarter-finals or semi-finals, dependent upon how many students participate in the club.  A schedule for this tournament will be produced as soon as we know how many teams we have.

Please feel free to contact Mike Lower if you have any specific questions about the program @ 371-2519.
