DEBATE / SNOW TEAM:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
DEBATE:
VCS will be offering a FREE policy debate class for middle and high school students during the months of February and March, 2011.  Class will meet each Tuesday from 3:15 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. in L2.  The focus of the class is to develop confidence while speaking in public, increase critical thinking skills, and learn the organizational and research skills necessary for successful debate.  This is the first year VCS has offered a full cross-examination style debate club, so don't worry if your perspective debater has no experience.  They won't be alone!
In addition to weekly class, two tournaments will be held.  Parents and other VCS students are encouraged to come watch their debaters in action during both tournaments.  In fact, the more spectators we have, the better the experience is for our students.  Debating in front of large groups adds an additional degree of difficulty that will help our debaters get the most out of their debates.   A short class for spectators will be held prior to the beginning of the first round of each tournament to help spectators make sense of what they are watching!
The first tournament will occur on the 22nd of February at VCS in lieu of regularly scheduled class.  This tournament will be round-robin style, and will not offer break rounds.  Break rounds are a play-off.  If a team wins enough rounds, or compiles enough speaker points, they "break" to quarter-finals and begin competing in a winner-moves-on bracket.
The second tournament will be held at VCS on Friday, March 25th.  This tournament will have both preliminary rounds, and break rounds.  We will break to either quarter-finals or semi-finals, dependent upon how many students participate in the club.  A schedule for this tournament will be produced as soon as we know how many teams we have.
Please feel free to contact Mike Lower if you have any specific questions about the program @ 371-2519.
SCHOLARSHIPS:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Please contact Mrs. OldenKamp at wendyroldenkamp@msn.comif you would like to donate money to a scholarship fund for high school students taking concurrent college credit classes while enrolled at VCS. The ability to take multiple college classes while in high school may be a life changing gift for a student. The cost is the fraction of the cost at a traditional four year university. Each dual college credit is $65. We would like to see qualifying students be able to take twenty college credits while in high school! Students who take college classes in the a high school setting are more likely to GO ON to earn a four year degree! Please contact Mrs. OldenKamp if you have additional questions about concurrent credit courses or donating money to assist students in reaching their full potential!
