Drop Spindle

Saturday Samplers

February 19, 2011

Drop Spindle

We will sample learning to spin, using the park and draft method. In this way, we learn to control the spindle's speed, and the amount of twist it generates, at all times.

Each student will receive a kit containing a drop spindle and 2 oz of wool roving. Those who have a drop spindle already are encouraged to bring it along, if so desired.

Viking Knit

Saturday Samplers

February 19, 2011

copper viking knitThis technique called Viking knitting has been around for a long time, and is also now a method of creating wire jewelry.  It is technically not knitting, but closer to another fiber technique called naalbinding or nalbinding.  Naalbinding is a technique of creating fabric by pulling the end of  the yarn or thread through loops using a needle.  The result, Viking Knit creates a beautiful base for jewelry as we will discover in this sampler class.

The student will receive enough wire to create and finish a bracelet  or earrings in Viking knit.

Our curator, Professor Barbara Schulman, as the head of the Fiber Department at Kutztown University, has had the pleasure of working with hundreds of gifted students over the last eighteen years.  As contemporary artists, students dye, stitch, weave, felt, knot, net, manipulate materials and invent new techniques with enthusiasm, energy, and ideas that never stop.

Dyeing with Kool-Aide

March 5, 2011

kool-aide dyed yarn
Kool-aide. It's more than a kids' drink, it can also be used as a dye.  In this class, we'll use this well-known powdered drink mix to paint a skein of yarn that will be wound in class.

In this class we'll dye yarn blanks using some tried and true techniques using kool-aide.

Our promise to you?

'some things looming' will NEVER cancel a 'sampler' due to low class registration.  What does that mean to you?  It means you can absolutely put this
a class in permanent ink on your calendar.

We've heard the frustration where a favorite class got cancelled on you at the last minute.  We want you to know, know, know that isn't going to happen here.

Will it be awkward if I'm the only one there?  Oh. My. No!  We'll just have great fun with a little one on one time.  Ask around.  It's happened from time to time.

Not good at planning? Don't have a lot of free time?   We designed 'saturday samplers' for you.  You can save a little if you plan, but you don't have to.  If a class is popular, you might not make it in due to class size.  Coming early for a class or calling on Saturday morning to secure your spot is a great idea.  Popular classes will most likely have a second session on the same day so you should always assume you have a good shot at getting what you want.
