MANDOLIN MUSIC IN THE AIR
|
Strolling the streets of Little Italy you might have stumbled across a musical treat in the way of Marc De Simone and resident Vito Iacovelli, a pair of voluntary mandolin players who regularly sit on the bench outside Rocco's on High Street to delight passers-by with their songs. In between the duo, a tambourine lays quiet on the bench - for later - and a guitar leans against the building. "Every day that the weather is nice, we play," said De Simone, who grew up in Hamilton and has been playing music for 40 years at weddings and other events. His 'day job' is as a consultant and president of International Leadership Development Consortium. De Simone was later spotted standing in Osteria da Amedeo playing music and singing with Vince Piscopo (on accordian below). Iacovelli, 90, a retired bricklayer, and native of Bari, Italy has lived in Little Italy for 20 years. He came to the United States in 1950 and learned to play the mandolin in the Army. About the neighborhood, he says, in a thick Italian accent, "Maybe it's better with our music - and friendlier."
