July is the 4th and so much more! Outdoor activities, cookouts, beach days, gardens in bloom, and of course, a wealth of opportunities for courses, events, trips and special interest groups at Maine's Senior Colleges. This month we bring you an invitation from OLLI at USM, offering MSCN members the opportunity to experience a fabulous fall trip to Italy, as well news from Lewiston-Auburn Senior College and Gold LEAF Institute, and the Poet's Corner.

We're pleased to publish the winning entry in the MSCN Photo Competition in this issue and congratulate the photographer, Sara Shute, a member of the Senior College at Belfast.

This year's MSCN Poet Laureate competition begins this month and MSCN members have until the end of December to submit an entry -- details are below.

Summer in Maine is fleeting -- enjoy!

Sincerely,

Kali Lightfoot

It's a Winner!

Winning photo from the MSCN 2102 competition
Sara Shute's winning photograph.

Sara Shute of the Senior College at Belfast submitted the winning entry to the Portraits: Family, Friends, and Pets MSCN photo competition. Sara was photographing a portrait of her husband David and their granddaughter Emily when Zoe the dog decided to sneak in and sample Emily's ice cream cone, resulting in this winning image. Congratulations to Sara, who will receive an Amazon Kindle e-reader!

Thank you also to the many other MSCN members who submitted photos to the contest. The entries were excellent, and it was a difficult decision to select one winner!

Variety Abounds at Gold LEAF

The Summer semester at Gold LEAF Institute in Farmington starts at the end of June and continues into October. It is comprised of 21 courses and experiences that run the gamut from quiet introspection to outdoor exercise. There are multi-session courses on spirit journeying, meditation, history, Maine book discussion, drumming, the Maine woods, politics, and singing. In single-session classes, members can learn about the stock market, the English language, and the juicing of fruits and vegetables.

Gold LEAFers can experience the Navajo and Hopi life in a travelogue-type class, learn about the forest in an instructional walk, and about seed propagation at Khadighar Farm. Other experiences include winery and food bank tours, a boat cruise, a concert and a theater production. And the latest in the "Our Town" series features Turner, thanks to the Turner Historical Museum staff.

It is surely to be an exciting semester!

 The Poet's Corner

Photo of boy jumping off diving boardWater Memories

Hit the water! Cannonball!
Swim and splash and shout!
Watermelon! Belly flop!
Spray it all about!

The horseplay ends.
The waves are still.
The splashes fall no more.
The lake is flat, but ripples spread
To find a distant shore.

And so I go about my life.
Enjoy the words I say.
The things I do, the splash I make
Will fade when I'm away.
Remember me for ripples, then
Wherever waters play.
