Welcome to Your March Newsletter!

 Spring illustration

It hasn't been a very wintery winter in Maine this season, but nevertheless it's great to see the days getting longer and the sunlight becoming stronger with each passing week.

We're pleased that spring is right around the corner, and we're delighted to bring you the March edition of the MSCN newsletter. This month's issue contains articles about goings-on at Lewiston/Auburn Senior College, Sunrise Senior College, Western Mountains Senior College, and the OLLI at USM.

We invite you to send your entry to the MSCN photo competition to the MSCN office. The theme for entries is  "Portraits: Family, Friends, and Pets," and we're eager to see what MSCN's creative members submit!

SSC Chases the Chill Away With Winter Warm-Ups Program

This year Sunrise Senior College replaced its customary winter months offering of Saturday afternoon movies with a five-week session of live entertainment, "Winter Warm-Ups."

Jim Sherman
The season started on January 28th with "Songs of the Civil War," led by SSC Board member, Jim Sherman, who is noted in the community as a member of Stephen Sanfilippo's Sea Chanty performers. Jim led a group sing-along and played several types of stringed instruments, including the guitar and mountain dulcimer. A hobbyist musician for over 35 years, Jim's repertoire includes songs of the land and sea, old ballads, and songs for children and adults who consider growing up optional. It was a rousing performance! Read more . . .

For more information or to share your ideas, please send an email to Nancy Davis or Marcia Foster-Austin, WMSC co-chairs.

Greening the Planet and the Piggybank

Recycling SymbolOLLI at USM has developed a very easy fundraising program that also provides a meaningful experience for participants.

OLLI became involved with the CLYNK recycling program in November 2011. CLYNK is a bottle and can redemption system that is offered through 46 Hannaford supermarkets throughout Maine. The original concept for CLYNK was to make recycling easier, as well as to offer an educational component for participants by showing them just how much their recycling helps the environment.

Individuals and community organizations can set up CLYNK accounts that accumulate a cash balance as their returnables redemptions add up. At the same time, the CLYNK database makes it possible to track the environmental impact every time a bag is dropped off.  Read more . . .

The Poet's Corner

photo of mother bear with cubs
 Bear Left
When we drove through Yellowstone
There were animals everywhere.
We saw some elk and buffalo
But we wanted to see a bear
So when the roadsign said BEAR LEFT
We took the left hand way.
We wondered how the rangers knew
We could see a bear that day.
We looked out all along that road
But found ourselves bereft.
It was good country for a bear
But the bear had left.
