WTBOA Sales Graduates in the News

2003 WTBOA Summer Yearling Sale graduate Indian Weaver made his first start of the new year and 100th in the now ten-year-old gelding's lifetime on January 17 at Sunland Park and came home with a two-length win in the mile $10,000 claiming event. The gelded son of Basket Weave-Go for Jackie, by Fit to Fight, who was bred and sold by Nina and Ron Hagen's El Dorado Farms LLC, has earned $337,672 in a career of 15-24-9.

$66,403 stakes-placed Poetry Writer, a daughter of Staff Writer who sold at the 1991 WTBOA yearling and 1992 WTBOA mixed sale was mentioned in the January 14, 2012, issue of The Blood-Horse in the Winner's Circle column titled "A Promising Beginning." The Esther Marr story was focused on newcomers Ted and Judy Nichols, whose first homebred runner was December 31 La Brea Stakes (G1) winner Teddy's Promise. In addition to the dam of Teddy's Promise, the Nichols own one other broodmare, Poetry Writer, a Washington-bred full sister to stakes winner Ahwanhee and stakes-placed Stogie. Poetry Writer, the dam of stakes-placed Western Writer, has a yearling colt by Storm Fever and will be bred to Dixie Chatter this spring.

First-time starter and 2010 WTBOA summer sale graduate Mo'em Down, a three-year-old son of Momentum out of stakes winner Buenobambino, by Chopin, won his first outing, a February 6 maiden special weight race at Portland Meadows. Bred by Jack Arnold, owned by Moonglow Farms and Mike Pattison, the Charles Essex trainee won the 51/2-furlong race by eight lengths under the guidance of rider Joe Crispin.
Emerald Downs Announces 2012 Stakes Schedule

The 2012 season of racing at Emerald Downs, which opens on April 13, will feature 30 stakes worth $1,585,000, led by the $200,000 Longacres Mile (G3) in its 77thedition.

The first stakes of the 81-day meeting will be the $50,000 Hastings Handicap for three and up fillies and mares run on May 13 and the meet's final stakes will be the $65,000 Gottstein Futurity on September 23.

Among the changes this year are the shortening of both the WTBOA Lads and Barbara Shinpoch stakes from eight to 6 -furlongs.

With a change in beverages now offered at the track, the former Pepsi-Cola Handicap now emerges as the Coca-Cola Handicap, but everything else remains the same for the mile race for male sophomore runners.

The two Northwest Stallion Stakes also have new monikers. The former "Knights Choice" division for fillies is now the "Son of Briartic," and the former "Strong Ruler" for male juveniles has been renamed the "Slewdledo." Both races were also reduced from 5 1/2 furlongs to five furlongs. Also losing a half-furlong is the now six-panel Dennis Dodge Stakes, one of six stakes scheduled for the September 9 Washington Cup X.

The Washington's Lottery Handicap will go back to its former moniker Kent Handicap.

The lone Quarter Horse stakes of the meet, the $60,000 Bank of American Champion Challenge, is set to run on September 2.

For a complete listing of stakes and conditions go to www.emeralddowns.com.

Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance Established

The National Thoroughbred Racing Association has launched the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (TAA). The new organization, which is based in Lexington, Kentucky, was formed by a broad-based group of Thoroughbred industry stakeholders and will serve as the accrediting body for aftercare facilities for retired Thoroughbreds and as a fundraising body to support approved facilities. The TAA was funded by initial seed money from Breeders' Cup Ltd., The Jockey Club and Keeneland Association. It is made up of owners, trainers, breeders, racetracks, jockeys, aftercare professional and other industry groups.

"It is our responsibility as owners, tracks, breeders, trainers, jockeys, bloodstock agents, and anyone who has a stake in the game to take responsibility for the aftercare of these great animals who are the keystone of our sport," said TAA board president and Thoroughbred owner Jack Wolf. "Securing support and funding from Breeders' Cup, The Jockey Club, Keeneland and so many other great organizations speaks to the credibility and importance of our effort and is so greatly appreciated."

James L. Gagliano, The Jockey Club's president and COO, added, "The Jockey Club's involvement and support of the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance is a natural extension of our other ongoing efforts in the area of Thoroughbred aftercare. The accreditation and proper funding for aftercare facilities will greatly enhance the well-being of our equine athletes, and we encourage other groups and individuals from all segments of our sport to support this Alliance."
News from the American Horse Council

The American Horse Council (AHC) reminds horsemen, especially in this election year, that it is important to build relationships with our elected leaders so "that they understand and appreciate the $102-billion horse industry's contribution to the economic, sporting ad recreational sectors of the U. S."

The AHC suggests that one of the best ways to build a relationship is to invite a legislator to your farm, ranch or equestrian event in their district.

If you would like to invite a member of Congress to your facility or event this year, the AHC will help you invite them and provide any guidance you might need. You can call or e-mail the AHC at (202) 296-4031 or
[email protected]for help. The AHC has a helpful brochure "Getting Involved in the 2012 Elections," which gives pointers.
2012 Tax Benefits for Horse Owners

Expense deduction (Section 179), which applies to horses, farm equipment and other depreciable property used in a business, has returned to $125,000 for 2012. This will permit a horse owner or breeder to write-off up to $125,000 in assets purchased and placed in service in one's horse business. The expense allowance of $500,000 for 2010-11 was phased out after purchases exceeded $2-million.

In addition, bonus depreciation has returned to 50 percent for 2012. This allows horse owners and other horse businesses to write off 50 percent of the cost of "new" capital assets, including horses, when purchased and placed in service in 2012. In order to be eligible for the bonus depreciation the original use of the property must commence with the taxpayer and any prior use makes the property ineligible. From September 8, 2010, through 2011, the bonus depreciation had been 100 percent for eligible assets purchased and placed in service during that time period.

Both the expense deduction and bonus depreciation can be used together.

"It is possible that the higher levels could be reinstated retroactively to January 1, 2012," said AHC president Jay Hickey. "The negotiations between now and the end of February on the one-year extension of the payroll tax reduction could include other changes to the tax code, such as the expense deduction or bonus depreciation. But this is speculation at this point."

WHBPA executive director Mary Ann O'Connell was quoted in the January 28, 2012, issue of The Blood-Horse in the article "Volume Dealers," which was a review of the January National HBPA convention. O'Connell discussed the issue of unwanted horses, of which she is the co-chairman of the National HBPA committee on that issue.

Corrections: It has been brought to our attention that information in the news item "Federal Agriculture Bill Lacks Language Banning Horse Inspections," which was reported in our January 13 Gate-to-Wire e-newsletter about PETAS's support of the return of horse slaughterhouses, had been misquoted in our sources. The organization is fully behind the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act of 2011.

2010 WTBOA sales graduate Bahati Gold was incorrectly reported in the January 25, 2012, e-newsletter as being a colt and finishing second in the Bill Wineberg Stakes last December. The now three-year-old runner is a filly who finished a close second in the Janet Wineberg Stakes.
  We apologize for the errors.
