Equine In Memoriam

Bold Magestrate

Mary Lou and Terry Griffin's champion producer Bold Magestrate was humanly put down on December 4 due the infirmities of old age. Foaled in April of 1985 in Kentucky, Bold Magestrate - a half-sister to Italian stakes winner Spegasc - was a daughter of Majesterial out of Two On One, by Lord Durham. A three-time stakes winner, Bold Magestrate, whose trainer Michael Dickinson always referred to as "The Crusher," in spite of her 15.1-hand size, equaled the five-furlong course record at Garden State when she won the Day Lilly Stakes and also equaled the course record when she won the about five-furlong Bryan Fields Stakes at Delaware Park. She also counted a victory in the Miss American Stakes at Atlantic City among her six win and earned $68,520 in her seven lifetime starts.

Purchased by the Griffins in the mid-1990s, Bold Magestrate foaled her first foal for the Buckley couple in 1996, the Slew O'Gold colt False Pass. The best runner among her seven winners, from ten starters and a dozen foals, is 1998 Washington champion two-year-old filly Best Judgement, a daughter of Demons Begone who won three stakes and earned $110,938. Another top runner out of Bold Magestrate was stakes-placed Mashiko, a son of Son of Briartic who won $112,539. Both Best Judgement and her half-sister Courtroom Charmer are currently broodmares at the Griffins' Griffin Place.

Retired from the breeding shed for the last three years, Bold Magestrate's final foal was the 2008 Matty G filly Glorified G.

According to Mary Lou, "We loved her for what she produced for us, and for her personality. She did everything with great gusto. She was always on 'fast forward, leave me alone' mode. We will miss her."
