EHV-1 Outbreak News and Updates

US-Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital Update on Equine Herpes Virus-1

Suggested guidelines for minimizing risk of disease transmission of  EHV-1:

  • Restrict movement of horses from the premises.
  • Physically isolate exposed horses a minimum of 30 feet away from other horses for 21 days.
  • Horses that are new to premises should also be isolated, as above.
  • If you suspect a horse may have been exposed, then monitor the horse's rectal temperature twice a day for 14 days and call your veterinarian immediately if a fever develops (102°F).
  • Use protective barrier clothing that can be changed in between horses when handling isolated or quarantined horses. Protective barrier clothing includes: gloves, disinfectant foot baths with impervious foot covers, and coveralls or protective gowns. Hands should be washed with soap and water or alcohol based hand sanitizers (if visibly soiled, hands must be washed with soap first) after handling each horse in quarantine.
  • Provide separate equipment for each horse and do not share buckets, feeders, tack, grooming equipment, towels etc among horses.
  • When filling water buckets, make sure the end of the hose does not touch the water in the bucket in order to avoid contamination with infectious material that may be on the outside of the hose.
  • Potential inanimate fomites such as buckets or tack, if used on more than one horse, should be disinfected before use on another horse. NOTE: The equine herpesvirus is susceptible to many disinfectants; however, whenever organic matter is present, washing and removal of organic material should be done first. If organic matter persists, use disinfectants suitable for use in the presence of organic matter, such as higher peroxygen compounds (e.g.-Trifectant, Virkon) or phenolics (e.g.-Tek-Trol or 1-Stroke Environ).
  • Consider vaccinating at risk healthy, afebrile horses on the premises to which exposed horses are returning. Consult your veterinarian for vaccination recommendations.

Emerald Downs Notes
Noosa Beach

Let's Meet at the Beach

In an effort to amend the only "blip" on his nearly perfect 2010 season, Jeff Harwood's multiple champion and 2010 Longacres Mile (G3) winner Noosa Beach once more faced off with Tice Ranch's 2009 Mile victor Assessment in the Governor's Handicap. Last year, Assessment, ridden by Gallyn Mitchell, had held off Noosa Beach by a neck in the 71st running of the important Mile prep. In the May 22, 2011, edition of the handicap, Mitchell again produced the winning ride, his third in the 6 1/2-furlong stakes, but stayed the course with Noosa Beach, who he had already teamed with in Canada exactly a month previous to be

a convincing winner of the George Royal Stakes.

A field of ten went to the post for the $50,000 stakes, with Noosa Beach the bettors' odds-on choice. Bogachiel had the lead at the quarter pole with a quick :21.92 fraction, but was soon passed in the lane by the favorite. Noosa Beach then held off seven-year-old Assessment's (Jump Start-Native Ghost) rally to defeat that rival by a length. Kimberly Noble's four-year-old Tequila Gold, who came into the race after winning five consecutive claiming races, finished another half-length back in third. Both Noosa Beach and Tequila Gold are Washington-bred geldings sired by Harbor the Gold. Noosa Beach is out of the Basket Weave mare Julia Rose and Tequila Gold's dam is the Casa Dante matron Onorena. Final race time was 1:14.27.

"He is probably one of the three best horses I've ever ridden, if not the best," said Mitchell, who gained the mount on Noosa Beach after his regular rider Ricky Frazier was injured. The Governor win gave the Emerald all-time leading rider his 1,268th victory at the track.

Trained and co-bred by Doris Harwood, Noosa Beach has won two-thirds of his 18 lifetime starts and earned $425,722. The 2010 Washington and Emerald Downs horse of the year is now tied in second place with Fleet Pacific and Ropersandwranglers with nine stakes wins apiece, one behind leader Handy N Bold's ten black-type victories. The race marked Harwood's record 48th stakes victory at the Auburn oval.

Also on the Sunday card, jockey Juan Gutierrez made four trips to the winners' circle and became only the third rider to earn 800 wins at Emerald.

The May 21 feature, an allowance/optional claiming race, was taken in good style by Coal Creek Farm's homebred filly My Untamed Heart. The four-year-old Kentucky-bred daughter of Value Plus-One for You, by Dayjur, who is trained by Vann Belvoir, handily won the six-panel race by 6 1/2 lengths. It was the filly's fourth win in seven career starts.  One for You's three-year-old daughter For You My Heart, by Kafwain, won her first outing, a six-furlong maiden $15,000 claimer, by eight lengths for the same connections on the Friday card.

Through May 23, rider Leslie Mawing still tops all jockeys with 23 wins, but only one ahead of Joe Crispin and Juan Gutierrez. Deborah Hoonan-Trujillo sits in fourth place win 19 tallies and Gallyn Mitchell ranks fifth with 16 victories.

Howard Belvoir continues to lead the trainer ranks with 16 wins. His son, Vann Belvoir, follows behind him after saddling a dozen winners. Tim McCanna is currently third in the standings with 11 wins. Fourth place Frank Lucarelli has had nine winners, one more than Doris Harwood and Robert Baze. Tom Wenzel, has the best winning percentage of the top trainers, having saddled seven winners from 20 starters for a 35 percent win ratio.

1099 Reporting Requirement Repealed

In early April, the US Senate passed a repeal of the onerous new 1099 reporting requirement that was scheduled to kick-in in 2012.  The House had approved the same 1099 repeal bill (HR 4), introduced by Congressman Lungren (R-CA), in early March. President Obama signed the bill on April 13, 2011.

"We are glad Congress took action to head off what would have been a large increase in tax-related paper-work for horse businesses in 2012," said AHC President Jay Hickey.

The new 1099 paperwork mandate had been a provision of the health care bill passed in 2010 that would have imposed burdensome new tax reporting requirements on every business in the US, including those in the horse industry, beginning in 2012. Current law requires 1099s to be sent to any independent contractor that receives $600 or more from a business in a year. The new provision would have required 1099s be sent not only to independent contractors, but also to any individual or corporation from whom a business purchased a total of $600 or more in goods or services in the year.

The bill repeals only the new broader reporting requirements. Businesses will still have to send 1099s to independent contractors who have earned $600 or more as the current law requires.

The Washington Horse Racing Commission (WHRC) plans to send out a note with the 2011 breeders' awards and owners' bonuses, that, as in years past, if the check they receive is less than $600, they will not be receiving a 1099 form.
