ESSB 5747 Passage Will Aid Fair Race Meets

After being passed 46-to-two in the Washington Senate and 93-to-two in the House,Governor Christine Gregoire signed bill ESSB 5747 into law on April 5, 2011. Sponsored by Senate Minority leader Mike Hewitt (R-Walla Walla), the bill will help keep the nonprofit Class C Eastern Washington meets racing and maintain jobs. Only meets holding dates in 2010 or who have been operating for the past five years are eligible.

With the passage of ESSB 5747, the Washington Horse Racing Commission (WHRC) will no longer have to provide $15,800 in purse money for each day of racing when insufficient funds are generated and purses could be funded at a much lower amount.

In addition, the bill authorizes the WHRC to receive gifts, grants and endowments from both public and private sources to support and regulate the nonprofit racetracks.

Sun Downs had already been granted six days of racing for 2011, but this bill will allow the WHRC to grant additional days of racing to Walla Walla (May 14-15), Waitsburg (May 21-22) and Dayton (May 28-29), provided the WHRC receives $3,000 in public or private donations for each day of Class C racing ($6,000 per two-day meet). These monies must be deposited in the WHRC operating account by May 6, 2011, and are intended to cover the regulatory costs associated with each meet.

Polish Miner's D Day Takes Shine Again Stakes

D Day, a six-year-old daughter of St. Hilaire Thoroughbreds stallion Polish Miner, drew away to score a 5 3/4-length win in the $50,000 Shine Again Stakes held at Pimlico Race Course on April 6. The 1 1/16-mile race for non-stakes-winning Maryland-bred fillies and mares drew a field of seven. D Day, who is out of the Ten Keys mare Hill Keys, improved her record to 5-2-6 from her 22 outings and has earned $160,066.

Parker's Storm Cat Leads 2011 Sire Ranks

Through April 8, Gibson Thoroughbred Farm's Parker's Storm Cat continues to dominate the Washington sire rankings with 12 winners among his 40 starters who have earned $306,909. And that does not include Ben's Cat first win of the year in the Mister Diz Stakes on April 9, for which he earned $45,000, nor the $11,400 added earnings of No Brakes after his victory on April 10 (see item under "More News").

Two Seattle Slew descendents are ranked in the next two spots. El Dorado Farms LLC's Matty G, by Seattle Slew's champion son Capote, ranks second with 10 winners from 37 starters who have earned $141,616. Only $280 behind him in third place is Woodstead Farm's own son of the great Seattle Slew, He's Tops, who has eight winners from 22 starters and $141,336.

Only $178 dollars separates St. Hilaire Thoroughbreds' Polish Miner from the third spot. The son of Danzig, whose daughter D Day won the $50,000 Shine Again Stakes on April 6 (see item above), has had six winners from 21 starters who have amassed $141,158.

El Dorado Farms stands or stood the next three stallions on the list. Private Gold ranks fifth with 11 winners from 20 starters and $127,601 in earnings. Deceased Tribunal, with nine winners and $119,299 in earnings, is ranked sixth, and is followed by deceased Cahill Road, with ten winners and $89,377.
