WTBOA Sale Graduate Smiling Tiger Finishes Third in BC Sprint

The 28th Breeders' Cup World Championships were held at Churchill Downs on November 5 and 6. This year's 14 races saw several runners with Washington and Oregon connections race, many of whom ran extremely well.

Two WTBOA sales graduates faced off in the $2-million Sentient Jet Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1). Smiling Tiger (2008 summer sale) and 2009 Washington-bred champion Atta Boy Roy (2006 summer sale) went off at nearly the same odds in the six-panel race as two-time Grade 1 winner Smiling Tiger was held at $5.90-to-one and Grade 2 winner Atta Boy Roy's fans bet him down to an even six-to-one in the field of 12.

Smiling Tiger, ridden by Russell Baze and trained by Jeff Bonde, bobbled just after the start, but came on to finish third in an exciting finish to Big Drama. The son of Hold That Tiger-Shandra Smiles, by Cahill Road, missed second place by only a neck. Smiling Tiger, a $40,000 purchase for Alan Klein and Philip Lebherz, earned $198,000 for his efforts, boosting his total to $717,864 and record to 5-0-5 in ten starts. Bred in Kentucky by Oregon physician Dr. Rodney Orr, Smiling Tiger became the leading WTBOA sale horse of all time, passing 1989 WTBOA alumni and Washington horse of the year Peterhof's Patea's long- held record of $623,367. Smiling Tiger is the first WTBOA sale graduate to place in a Breeders' Cup championship race.

Atta Boy Roy, who was ridden by Calvin Borel for Roy and Ellie Schaefer, finished tenth in the race, 9 1/2 lengths behind the winner, but was pulled up after the finish line by Borel, who had noted a bit of sensitivity in his mount's right forelimb, and vanned off the track. It was later found that the five-year-old ridgeling son of Tribunal-Irish Toast, by Synastry, had suffered a mild injury to a medial branch suspensory ligament. Trainer Valerie Lund, who was featured in the "Fresh Faces" column in the November 5, 2010, issue of Thoroughbred Times Today, said Atta Boy Roy cooled out well after the race. The injury is not life-threatening and probably not career-threatening either, according to chief Breeders' Cup veterinarian Dr. Wayne McIllwairth. A $4,500 yearling, Atta Boy

Roy, who was bred by Patricia Murphy and Rick and Debbie Pabst, has earned $479,696 and won ten races for the Port Orchard-based Schaefers and their R.E.V. Racing.

Dr. George Todaro, of Seattle, along with John Carver, Halo Farms and trainer Jerry Hollendorfer own Kentucky-bred Dakota Phone, who scored an upset win in the $1-million Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (G1). The five-year-old gelded son of Zavata (who stems from the family of He's Tops) out of World of Gold, by Spinning World, earned his first Grade 1 win in a time of 1:39.29 and upped his earnings to $1,273,810 after his $540,000 payday.

"I was pleased to see him dead last at the beginning because I knew that is how he likes to run," said Todaro. Dakota Phone caught Morning Line at the wire to win by a short head.

Unbeaten Awesome Feather, who scored a 2 1/4-length win in the $2-million Grey Goose Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) and who will probably get the nod for the 2010 championship in her division, is a Florida-bred daughter of Awesome of Course out of stakes winner Precious Feather, by Gone West. Precious Feather's dam, Last Feather, is a half-sister to the Swaps mare Twill, dam of four-time leading Washington sire Staff Writer.

Another filly likely to be named national champion in 2010 is Redmond resident Mark Dedomenico, John Carver, Peter Abruzzo and trainer Hollendorfer's sophomore Blind Luck. Even thought the sophomore daughter of Pollard's Vision-Lucky One, by Best of Luck, finished second to four-year-old Unrivaled Belle in the $2-million Breeders' Cup Ladies Classic (G1), she has won three Grade 1 events and two Grade 2 races in 2010. Also a multiple Grade 1 winner at two, the consistent filly sports a lifetime record of 9-4-2 from 15 outings and has earned $2,388,712, of which over $1.67-million has been added this year.

Willcox Inn, who finished third to the late-charging Pluck in the $1-million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (G2) in only his third lifetime start, races for All In Stable, which is comprised of a partnership of Jack and Theresa Hodge's Enumclaw-based Oak Crest Farm LLC (25 percent), John Adgar (25 percent), Three Kings Stable (25 percent) and Hillary Pridham, Marette Farrell and trainer Michael Stidham (25 percent. Willcox Inn, who finished third in the Breeders' Futurity (G1) at Keeneland in his previous outing, has earned $155,800. The Kentucky-bred colt is a son of Harlan's Holiday-De Aar, by Gone West. Wesley Ward's Madman Diaries finished fourth in the mile race.

Also among the other exclusive winners this year was four-year-old Dangerous Midge, who took the $3-million Emirates Airline Breeders' Cup Turf (G1) by 1 1/4 lengths. The son of Lion Heart-Adored Slew, by Seattle Slew, is a half-brother to stakes-placed Silver Traffic and to Oregon sire Sound of Rhythm. British-based Dangerous Midge, who gave rider Frankie Dettori his fourth Turf win, has won six of his 11 lifetime starts and earned $1,790,324.

Reba Is Tops Wins at Hollywood Park
2009 Washington horse of the year Reba Is Tops returned to the winner's circle on November 7 after winning a six furlong allowance/$62,500 optional claiming race by three-quarters of a length over Hollywood Park's turf course. Ridden by Rafael Bejarano and trained by Mark Glatt, Reba Is Tops clocked out at 1:08.44 (the course record is 1:07.54) in her 11th lifetime win. The six-year-old daughter of He's Tops-Miss Kyama, by Present Value, who was bred by Rich and Ann Richardson and races for Kenny Marshall, Gordy Jarnig and Eric Schweiger, has earned $325,709.
Another WTBOA Sale Graduate in the News
Modern Cowboy, a three-year-old Tiznow colt, won his fourth race in eight tries in a 1 1/16-mile allowance/$80,000 optional claiming race at Churchill Downs on November 4. The brother to stakes-placed Tis a Man and half-brother to stakes winner Hype is out of Washington champion two-year-old filly and WTBOA Summer Yearling Sale graduate Western Woman, a daughter of West by West. Modern Cowboy, a $200,000 2008 Keeneland September Yearling Sale graduate who is trained by Todd Pletcher, has earned $128,498.
You and I Retired

The Woods families' Woodstead Farm and stallion owners Fran and Ron Stolich announced in early November that prominent Washington stallion You and I, who will be 20 in 2011, has been retired from stud.

The Grade 1-winning son of Kris S. out of Peruvian champion sprinter La Chaposa (Per), by Ups, has sired 43 stakes horses in his first 12 crops. Among the best of his 18 stakes winners were Scandinavian champion In the Woods, Peruvian champion Marimer, 2005 Washington champion two-year-old colt Schoolin You, five-time Grade 1 winner and $2.1-million earner You and Ron Crockett's Grade 2 stakes winner Harvard Avenue. You and I, who has sired the earners of over $18-million, has $407,074 in 2010 earnings, which includes the efforts of three stakes-placed runners.

You and I originally entered stud in Kentucky in 1996. He also stood in California before serving his first season in Washington in 2006. You and I, who is to be pensioned at Woodstead, is the damsire of four stakes winners in 2010.
Other Washington News

Mark Dedomenico LLC and trainer Jerry Hollendorfer's two-year-old filly Cathy's Crunches, a Florida-bred daughter of West Acre out of stakes-placed Miss Atticus, by Atticus, earned her third win in five starts and first stakes victory when she took the $50,000 Golden Gate Debutante Stakes, in gate-to-wire fashion, by 5 1/2 lengths on November 6 at the Northern California track. She has earned $78,520.

John and Janene Maryanski's stakes-winning Gadget Queen improved her record to 10-10-4 from 34 starts when the six-year-old Washington-bred daughter of Lucky Acres' Flying With Eagles-Knights Fantasy, by Staff Riot, dead-heated for the win with Rated Fiesty in a six-furlong allowance race at Golden Gate Fields on November 7. The winning duo finished 6 1/2 lengths in front of Edward and Theresa DeNike's third place Seeking the Queen. Bred by Sharin Lunceford, Gadget Queen has earned $294,710.

Hugs to All, the four-year-old Alphabet Soup gelding who won a seven-furlong allowance at Hollywood Park on November 6, is a full brother to Grade 1 stakes winner Alphabet Kisses and a half-brother to champion imported two-year-old filly in Panama Preciosa V., a stakes-placed daughter of Leo Castelli. Preciosa V.'s Washington-bred yearling daughter of Northern Afleet was consigned by Griffin Place LLC, agent for her breeder Charles Arnold Jr. to the WTBOA September sale.

Correction

In the November 4 edition of Gate-to-Wire, there were two mistakes in the report of Washington horse of the year and 2010 Washington leading freshman sire Demon Warlock's move to Roche Farm. The stallion is owned by Tim (not Mike) Floyd, Mike Nist, Allen Floyd, Keith Briggs and Michael Roche and he has sired five foals (not starters) from his first crop, from which has come two winners, including stakes winner Winter Warlock, and one placed horse from his three starters.
