Smiling Tiger defeated older runners for the second time in Grade 1 company when the three-year-old colt won the $250,000 Ancient Title Stakes (G1), a six-furlong sprint run at Oak Tree at Hollywood Park on October 9. Smiling Tiger, who is trained by Jeff Bonde, earned $150,000 for his efforts for the partnership of Alan Klein and Philip Lebherz. Double Hall of Fame rider Russell Baze was aboard the chestnut colt who improved his record to 5-0-4 from nine starts and has earned $519,864. Final race time was 1:09.37. Smiling Tiger also earned his second 101 BRIS Speed Rating of the year in the Saturday stakes. He had earned his first after winning the Bing Crosby Stakes (G1) at Del Mar in August.
"This is a nice colt. He ran a gutty and determined race," said Baze. "He's a three-quarter-mile kind of horse and we figured out a little bit more how to handle him in a race."
Finishing a half-length back in second was four-year-old Supreme Summit, by Cactus Ridge, who out paced the $2.40-to-one favorite, five-year-old E Z's Gentleman, by Yankee Gentleman, by three-quarters of a length.
Smiling Tiger's latest win earned him a starting berth in the Sentient Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1), via the Breeders' Cup Challenge "Win and You're In" series, to be run at Churchill Downs in early November. Bred by Dr. Rodney Orr, Smiling Tiger, a son of Hold That Tiger, is the third foal out of Orr's Shandra Smiles, an Emerald Downs stakes-winning daughter of Cahill Road. Consigned by Orr to the 2008 WTBOA September sale with agent Halvorson Bloodstock Services, Smiling Tiger was purchased by Bonde as agent for $40,000. |
