Carry On John Wins Inaugural H.
The 2010-11 Portland Meadows meeting got underway on October 4 with a nine-race card which featured the $20,000 Inaugural Handicap, a six-furlong race for three and up runners.
Ron Crockett Inc.'s homebred Carry On John, with Ricky Frazier in the saddle and who was coming off an allowance/$25,000 optional claming race victory at Emerald Downs on September 25, was the even-money crowd favorite in the field of five. Olympic Lights led for the first half-mile but gave way in the drive to Wasserman, who was caught in the final yards by Carry On John, who took his first stakes victory by three-quarters of a length. Multiple stakes winners Wasserman, Howard Belvoir's gallant eight year-old son of Cahill Road-Share the Knight, and Clockwise Racing's Overtime Victory, a four-year-old son of Victory Gallop-Hanselina, finished in the second and third place spots. Final race time was 1:11.18 over a fast track.
A six-year-old Kentucky-bred son of Boundary, Carry On John was winning his seventh race in 16 starts and the H.R. Mullens' trainee has now earned $81,621.
Carry On John is the fourth stakes horse produced by Crockett-raced $300,562 stakes winner Carrie Can, a daughter of Saratoga Six who is also the dam of Grade 2 stakes winner and Grade 1-placed Harvard Avenue and Emerald Downs stakes-placed Cody to Reggie and Carrie Cat.
The all sources handle for the nine-race card was $613,935, which is over 43 percent higher than the 2009 opener. The new 14 percent takeout Pick 4 water had a pool of $14,257 and yielded a $352.80 payout for a $1 wager.
The 2010-11 Portland Meadows' "People's Horse" is three-year-old Oregon-bred gelding Taylor Jones. Trained by Ben Root, the son of Seattle Shamus-Designer Forest, by Forestry, has a record of 1-2-1 from four starts and has earnings of $5,525.
Parker's Storm Cat's Ben's Cat Continues Unbeaten Streak
Four-year-old Ben's Cat, a son of Gibson Thoroughbred Farm's Parker's Storm Cat, won the $100,000 Maryland Million Turf Sprint Handicap at Laurel Park by 4 1/2 lengths on October 2 to remain unbeaten is six starts. It was the second stakes victory the four-year-old gelding out of Twofox and upped the Maryland-bred's earnings to $149,460.
Washington-breds Win Two B Cup Stakes
Lethbridge's annual B Cup Day, a series of seven stakes, was run on October 2. Two Washington-breds and one Oregon-bred were among the day's winners.
The $10,977 B Cup Three-year-old Fillies Stakes was taken in gate-to-wire fashion by Tab Young's Snowbound Gina, who drew clear by 1 1/2 lengths to win the about six-furlong race in 1:11.48. Snowbound Gina, a daughter of former Washington stallion Snowbound out of Missionary Kid, by Robin des Pins, was bred by Todd Pulse. Snowbound Gina improved her record to 2-2-2 from nine starts and has earned $13,451.
Washington-bred runners finished one-two-three in the $10,831 B Cup Sprint. In fact, five of the seven runners competing in the about 5 1/2-furlong race were foaled in Washington. Gord Goruk and Debbie and Bill Pearce's Midnight Martini went gate-to-wire to score a neck victory over Skimming Song, a four-year-old son of Skimming-Hit Song. Race favorite Lafleur, an 11-year-old son of Tamourad-Meritable's Flash, went over the $200,000 with his third place finish. Five-year-old Midnight Martini, a 2006 WTBOA summer sale graduate, was bred by Terry and Mary Lou Griffin. The gelded son of Slewdledo-Late Nite Martini, by Three Martinis, has now earned $50,236 and has a record of 9-7-3 from 32 lifetime starts.
Washington-bred Stolen Sagoi, a daughter of Pulse Ranch stallion Stolen Gold out of Sagoi, finished second by a half-length to Oregon-bred Missisissy (Harbor the Gold-Cascade Jazz, by Cascadian) in the $10,685 B Cup Two-year-old Fillies Stakes.
WHRC Awards 2010 Jockey Incentive Awards
On September 20, 2010, the Washington Horse Racing Commission distributed $35,000  in jockey incentive awards.  These awards were intended to attract riders to the state's nonprofit race meets in southeast Washington during the 2010 racing season. To qualify for an award a jockey had to ride at least two days. Awards were calculated by multiplying the number of starts a rider had by the number of days they rode, which was then divided by 19 (the total number of race days at the five nonprofit race meets in 2010).
The 2010 jockey incentive awards were distributed as follows: Connie Doll ($5,613), Ruben Camacho ($5,090), Nikeela (Black) Crater ($5,014), Terrance Birdrattler ($3,799), Ashley Zacherie ($3,381), Hugo Herrera ($3,242), Jose Torres ($1,899), Freddy Ibarra ($1,868), Brian Merrill ($1,330), Joe Crispin ($1,161), Greg Goosby ($1,119), Jose Rivera ($836), Nate Parker ($287), Ben Chavis ($127), Davis Lopez ($82), Jose Figueroa ($57), Antonio Alberto ($44), Jesse Chavis ($38) and Nate Smith ($13).
