2009 WTBOA Sales Graduate Wins Edmonton Juvenile
Mr. Instigator became the first graduate of the 2009 WTBOA Summer Yearling Sale to become a stakes winner when the gelded son of Chapel Royal-Blazed Star, by Gate Dancer, took the $47,405 Edmonton Juvenile Stakes by a half-length at Northlands Park on July 17. The footnotes from the Equibase chart for the race inform that Mr. Instigator, the $1.70-to-one second choice behind $1.65-to-one favorite Oren's Star, who finished fourth, had a bit of a rough trip. After drifting out while entering the first turn, Mr. Instigator and his rider Fernando Perez were carried out eight-wide into the upper stretch but closed steadily to gain his second victory.
Consigned by Halvorson Bloodstock Services LLC, agent to the Washington sale, Mr. Instigator was purchased by North American Horse Company for $20,000. The Kentucky-bred races in the colors of Glen Todd and Patrick Kinsella and is trained by Alan May.
Including the $28,443 he earned for the Edmonton Juvenile, Mr. Instigator has earned $41,087 and is unbeaten in two starts. In his initial outing, on May 9 at Hastings Racecourse, Mr. Instigator went gate-to-wire to win a 3 1/2-furlong maiden special weight race by 2 1/2 lengths.
Other Sales Grads in the News
Rewritten, the three-year-old El Corredor filly who won the $50,000 Washington's Lottery Handicap at Emerald Downs on July 11, is the third stakes winner 1993 WTBOA Summer Yearling Sale graduate and stakes winner Pleas Write, by Staff Writer, has produced for Ron Crockett.
Auzeezee improved her record to 2-3-2 from seven starts after the three-year-old British Columbia-bred daughter of Vying Victor-Trillia, by Regal Classic, won a 6 1/2-furlong allowance/optional claiming race at Hastings Racecourse on July 11. Bred by Prescott Farms, the $18,000 2008 WTBOA Sales graduate has earned $45,223 for Edgar B. Smith.
Assessing the Governor

Assessment winning Governor's Handicap
Emerald Downs held its first stakes double header of the year on July 11 with the 71st running of the Governor's Handicap and the 14th running of the Washington's Lottery Handicap.
The 6 1/2-furlong Governor's has long been a favorite warm-up for the Longacres Mile (G3), which precedes the track's marquee race by six weeks. A field of eight faced the starter, which included six runners who have been named track and/or Washington champions.
Jeff Harwood's Noosa Beach (Harbor the Gold-Julia Rose) went into the $50,000 race as the  odds-on favorite after winning all three of his 2010 starts, including a 9 1/4-length tally in the Budweiser Handicap in his previous outing .The four-year-old Washington-bred gelding, with Ricky Frazier on board, was bumped at the start but soon grabbed the early lead with fractions of :22, :44.60 and 1:08.20.
Meanwhile Assessment, who had won the 2009 Mile for Lou and Diane Tice's Tice Ranch Stables LLC, was content to wait mid-pack. As the runners reached the final turn, Gallon engaged Noosa Beach in a move that might have helped give Assessment the final edge. Assessment and regular rider Gallyn Mitchell snatched the lead at the eighth pole, as rival  Noosa Beach continued to fight back in a stiff drive. But Assessment would not be denied this time, as the six-year-old Kentucky-bred held off Noosa Beach by a neck at the wire to finish in 1:14.40.
Five-year-old Gallon (Victory Gallop-Bellehop), who runs for Michael and Amy Feuerborn, finished another four lengths back in third place.
"I feel so good that Assessment still has the heart and courage that he had last year," said Mitchell. It marked the first win in three 2010 outings for Assessment, who had surgery to remove an ankle chip last September.
"This division is so competitive," the winning rider added. "It's going to be the little things that win races. Everyone's going to need a little racing luck. Now that he's back on his game, we are looking for a repeat in the Longacres Mile. He's coming around just in time."
A Kentucky-bred son of Jump Start-Native Ghost, by Silver Ghost, Assessment improved his record to 8-4-3 from 28 starts and has earned $384,730.
Trainer Howard Belvoir has now won three of the last four runnings of the Governor's Handicap. After winning the 2007 and 2008 editions with Wasserman, Assessment and Wasserman finished two-three behind Atta Boy Roy in 2009. Wasserman, who was also bred and races in Belvoir's silks, finished fifth in his fourth straight Governor's and with the $1,250 he earned, surpassed Captain Condo's $503,285 record earnings mark at Washington tracks. The eight-year-old son of Cahill Road has now earned $504,312 while running in his home state

Rewritten winning Washington Lottery Handicap
Another three-race winning streak fell by the wayside when Ron Crockett Inc.'s homebred Rewritten got up in the last strides to score a 1 1/2-length victory over favorite Sis's Sis in the $50,000 Washington's Lottery Handicap.
A field of eight set forth to challenge Michael and Amy Feuerborn's Sis's Sis, who had been unbeaten in three tries this season, including the Washington-bred daughter of Cahill Road-Carni Gal's  victory in the Irish Day Handicap.
Touch of Elegance took the early lead with fractions of :23 and :46.60, but was passed by Sis's Sis as the field neared the three-eighths marker.
Rewritten, with Francisco Duran in the irons, rallied from sixth place to wear down the favorite and win the 1 1/16-mile stakes in 1:43 flat. Perfect Soul Brothers LLC's Soul Custody (Perfect Soul [Ire]-Halo's Gleam) finished another 2 1/2 lengths behind in third, but four lengths the better of fourth place Tapit So Lightly.
"I knew Rewritten was something special, but I didn't know how special she was," said Duran. "I had a lot of confidence that she would run well, and she proved that today."
A Kentucky-bred daughter of El Corredor and the third stakes winner produced out of Crockett's stakes-winning Staff Writer matron Pleas Write, Rewritten had taken eight tries to break her maiden, but had been competitive enough to finish second in the Barbara Shinpoch Stakes, third in the Angie C Stakes and run fourth in the Gottstein Futurity last year. The Frank Lucarelli-trained filly improved her record to 2-4-1 in nine starts and has earned $69,663. The race marked Crockett's 16th stakes win at Emerald

Safe Harbors
The two winners, Couldabenthewhisky and Carrabelle Harbor, of the July 18 Northwest Stallion Stakes have several things in common, besides being two-year-olds in their first stakes attempts. First, they both were the betting choices in their divisions of the 5 1/2-furlong stakes. Second and third, each won by 1 1/4 lengths and had a finish time of 1:03.80. Fourth and fifth, they were both sired by Harbor the Gold an, each was bred by Pam and Neal Christopherson's Bar C Racing Stables, the home of Harbor the Gold. Sixth, each was ridden to their wins by Ricky Frazier - who holds the track record with 67 stakes wins and won five races on the Sunday card; and seventh, each runner remains unbeaten.

The Northwest Stallion Strong Ruler Stakes was contested first. Nine colts and geldings met the starter at the gate. Couldabenthewhisky, who is trained by Bonnie Jennie and races in partnership for Jenne and her husband Wally's Friendship Stables, Andy Maib's Longshot Racing and Craig and Stanley Frederickson, broke sharply and held a narrow lead over Stolen Rio for the first three eighths. Couldabenthewhisky opened a clear lead into the lane to win his second race in two tries. Warlock Stables, Horseplayers Racing Club HRC 032 and James Broussard's Winter Warlock, a colt from the first crop of 2004 Washington horse of the year Demon Warlock out of stakes winner Royal Snowflight, finished second, 1 1/2 lengths in front of Vital Signs Stable's Gdanz Express (Liberty Gold-Polish Vodka). Stolen Rio and Stellar Blue dead-heated for fourth place.
Couldabenthewhisky, a $5,500 WTBOA September sale graduate, has earned $23,498. The gelding, the first foal out of Bahati, by Horse Chestnut (SAf), was co-bred by the Christophersons with Melodie (Bultena) and Doak Walker and Bill and Carol Ginger.

Two races later, Carrabelle Harbor dueled for the early lead from the get-go with The Gang and I and Iforgottobeme with a quick first fraction of :21.80. Still racing just off the heels of Iforgottobeme, Carrabelle Harbor drew clear of that rival in the final yards to take the first juvenile filly stakes of the season.
"She had to overcome a couple of mistakes today," said Frazier. "I knew she had a ton of speed, and had she broken sharp, she would have been two lengths in front."
Frazier was scoring a record fifth consecutive win in the Northwest Stallion Knights Choice Stakes.
"Winning this race for the fifth straight time is just a tribute to the trainers. I really appreciate the opportunity they gave me to ride their good horses."
Frazier and winning trainer Doris Harwood have combined to win 16 of the last 38 juvenile stakes at Emerald Downs.
Harwood had two runners in the filly stakes, Carrabelle Harbor, and Stepping Stone Stables' Bell Adieu, who had run second in her only other outing. The winning Carrabelle Harbor, who earned $16,521 for co-owners Bar C Racing and Melodie and Doak Walker's Desert Rose Racing LLC, is a full sister to 2008 Oregon champion two-year-old filly Catalina Harbor. In addition, their dam, Silver City Lilly, by Tiffany Ice, is a full sister to two Oregon distaff champions -Silver Patrona and Corona Del Hielo.
Bell Adieu, who finished third, 5 1/4 lengths behind Al Adams, David Israel and Gary Borman's recent $12,500 claim Iforgottobeme (Free At Last-Evans Talory), is from the final crop of Tribunal and out of multiple stakes producer Campanita, a half-sister to Washington horse of the year and Grade 1 winner Rings a Chime.
